  • Boyne City Farmers Market from 8 a.m. to noon every Wednesday and Saturday through October.

  • Winter Farmers Market will open November 5
    A winter farmers market in Boyne City will be a reality this year. Thanks to the support of the Boyne District Library, the Boyne City Farmers "Winter" Market will officially open Saturday, November 5th. Winter hours will be Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The market will be held in the red building next to the library. The library recently purchased the building for possible future expansion. It is estimated the space will allow for approximately 15 to 20 vendors to participate. The market will be held each Saturday in November and December with the exception of Nov. 26 (Thanksgiving weekend) and Dec. 24th. Two special markets are also planned. The first is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the second is Dec. 23. The market also plans to be open January through April but a schedule will not be set until mid to late December. NOTE: the regular outdoor Farmers Market will continue in Veterans Park from 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and Saturdays through Oct. 30.

  • NIGHTMARE AT CHALLENGE MOUNTAIN
    a haunted house and much more, will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. every Friday and Saturday in October at 2205 N. Springbrook Road, Boyne Falls. Admission is $10 for adults and two children for $5. All proceeds benefit Challenge Mountain.

  • LEAF PICKUP in the City of Boyne City begins Oct. 10 and continues through Nov. 11 on Mondays and Fridays only. Residents should set bagged leaves curbside in clearly marked biodegradable bags, which are available at Boyne Coop True Value, Boyne City Hardware and Glen's Market. Brush will not be picked up curbside but may be brought to the North Boyne Compost Site on Robinson Street. You may haul your own leaves or brush, bagged in biodegradable bags or unbagged to the compost site, which is open seven days a week.

  • TOYS FOR TOTS
    Summertree Residential Centers are kicking off their Toys for Tots drive at their offices at 210 N. Lake St. in Boyne City. They will start collecting toys Oct. 27 and are open from 8 a.m. to 4 pm.

  • Harvest Festival
    Boyne City celebrates autumn bounty at its Harvest Festival Saturday, Oct. 1. The annual event brings music, crafts and fall produce to the downtown from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Portions of Water and Lake streets will be closed to traffic. The Farmers Market will move from Veterans Park to Water and Lake streets for the event. Folk art demonstrations feature a variety of exhibitors, including a broom maker and blacksmith. There will also be an arts and crafts show. Hayrides start at 10 a.m. and there will also be children's games and pumpkin painting, a pie eating contest, a pie baking contest and more in the main festival area. The Boyne District Library will host a Fall Harvest Fun program from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Community Room with fall stories, crafts and harvest treats. The festival is sponsored by the Boyne City Main Street Program and the Boyne Area Chamber. More than 40 scarecrows will be displayed around downtown from late September until Halloween, including the one pictured above, made by the folks at Boyne’s Beyond Borders.     10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the Harvest Festival, four at a time on four stages in the downtown. Performing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. will be David Youngman, Harbor Hoe Down (with Square Dancing), Kelly Shively and Norm Hausler, and Younce Guitar Duo. Playing from 1 to 4 p.m. will be Holly Keller and Friend, JUSDUIT, Sweet Water Blues Band and Crooked Trio Jazz Band.

  • SCIENCE MAGIC
    just in time for Halloween, Science Magic is the theme at Second Saturday Science Day on Oct. 8 at Raven Hill Discovery Center. Come and be prepared to learn some cool “magic tricks”. Thanks to a grant awarded by the Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, the Center offers free admission and special science activities for families on the second Saturday of each month in 2011.There will be fun problem-solving demos and activities to fit various ages, abilities and interests every month.

  • FRESHWATER CONCERT
    Freshwater Studio has announced the first concert for its monthly music series. The Thornetta Davis Trio will perform the blues at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8. The trio performed at Freshwater last year and has toured with Kid Rock and Bob Seger. Call 231-582-2588 to reserve tickets.

  • FREE CLINIC BENEFIT
    The Boyne City Eagles will host a gala benefit event Saturday, Oct. 8, for the Boyne Area Free Clinic. A chicken barbecue with seven musical performers, silent and live auctions and 50/50 raffles will be featured. Admission is an $8 donation for dinner and $2 for beverages. Doors will open at noon on Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Eagles Lodge, 106 River St., in Boyne City. Call (231) 582-6904 for more information about the event. Musicians scheduled to play include TNT, Northern Nights, Hipps-N-Ricco, Nelson Olstrom, Judy Slocum and the Ramblers, Tommy Zipp and the Kowalske Family Band. The Free Clinic ensures that all people who need access to medical care are provided that opportunity. It’s a charitable organization driven by volunteers that will provide care to any person in need without the ability to pay. The Boyne City Firefighters are doing the cooking, and Fletch’s of Petoskey donated a giant tent for the event.

  • Nelson Olstrom to play BAC concert
    Boyne Arts Collective in downtown Boyne City will present another event in its continuing Stage Concert Series. Nelson Olstrom, a singer, songwriter, and guitarist who has performed throughout the United States and Europe, will be performing his original songs from 4 to 6 p.m. Nelson has been one of Northern Michigan's most popular solo artists for many years. He has announced that the concert will benefit the Boyne Area Free Clinic, currently in the midst of a fund drive to keep its doors open. Admission is by donation, with a suggested donation of $5 to $10. The concert takes place in the art gallery, currently displaying the "Portraits of People and Pets" show. The doors open at 3:15 p.m., and the concert starts at 4. There will be free refreshments, along with discount coupons from local businesses. The BAC is located at 210 South Lake St., Boyne City.

  • CAMP DAGGETT
    The Fall Festival is back at beautiful Camp Daggett on Walloon Lake, Sunday, October 9 from 12 Noon to 5:00 p.m. Fall is the perfect time to visit Camp Daggett. The fall colors surrounding Walloon Lake are beautiful, and families can enjoy outdoor activities then return to the main lodge to warm up by the fireplace. Open to the public, this event offers new visitors a chance to see the Camp in its fall glory, and former campers a chance to share their stories. Enjoy activities like.

    Boyne District Library will hold a free vision screening for all ages on Monday, Oct. 10 from 1-4 p.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 3-6 p.m. No appointments are necessary.     The Circle of Strength (COS) cancer support group of Charlevoix Area Hospital is hosting its third annual “Tickled Pink” event on Thursday, October 13, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the hospital Solarium. Come and enjoy an early evening of wine, cheese, and chocolate. There will be 30% off everything in the hospital gift shop during the event. Vouchers for free mammograms will be available (as always) for those without health insurance. This fun and light-hearted event will be catered by Esperance of Charlevoix with chocolate by Kilwins. There is no charge for this event, but donations will be graciously accepted and used locally to assist those affected by cancer.

  • COSTUME EXCHANGE
    The Great Start Parent Coalition and Char-Em ISD are teaming up to offer a Halloween costume exchange for children in the area. The Halloween costume exchange will take place from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at the ISD Taylor School for Exceptional Learners, 1515 Cemetery Road, in Petoskey behind the Petoskey Cinema (enter off Cemetery Road). The exchange is geared for children ages 12 and under. Parents can bring in gently used Halloween costumes for exchange or take home a Halloween costume during the family-themed event. In addition to Halloween costume exchanges, young children and families can enjoy pumpkin decorating, treats and games such as Mummy Wrap and Squash Bowling. The first 50 children will receive a free pumpkin. Families that do not have costumes for exchange are welcome to attend and find a costume for their child.   • "Boyne Reads" author to share 'vision' in talk here
    A critically acclaimed author will come to Boyne City to share his research and writing experience from his most recent nonfiction book. Robert Kurson, of Chicago, will speak to both Boyne City High School students and community members on Thursday, Oct. 20, the highlight of the Boyne Reads 2011 program by Boyne District Library. His book, “Crashing Through: The Extraordinary True Story of the Man Who Dared to See,” features the story of Mike May, a man who regained his vision after a revolutionary stem cell transplant surgery.

    Water Street Cafe will be hosting a Halloween Party Open House for children on Sunday, Oct. 30 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. They will be serving pizza, cider, doughnuts and assorted Halloween treats. All money collected will be donate to Eta Nu to benefit their "Dressed for Chill 2011" campaign to provide winter coats and outerwear to elementary school children in Boyne City.   • ZOMBIE FUN RUN
    Boyne Area Cross Country teams are sponsoring Zombie Mountain Attack, a 5K Fun Run at Avalanche Mountain on Sunday, Oct. 30. Registration is $10 and starts at noon, with the race starting at 1 p.m. This family friendly, yet thrilling, fun run will be held at Avalanche Preserve, 1129 Wilson St., Boyne City.All proceeds support the Boyne City and Boyne Falls High School Cross Country teams. This isn’t your ordinary 5K run. The hilly terrain meanders through the beautiful 340-acre nature preserve with amazing views from the top of Avalanche Mountain. Runners are welcome to dress in Halloween costume, and each will be fitted with two flag football-type flag belts, each flag signifying one life. Zombies in costume will be dispersed along the 5K course to hinder and scare the dickens out of the runners. Runners will attempt to make it through the course without losing both their flags. All registrants will receive a keepsake gift, food and beverage, and are invited to an afterglow party at No Boundaries, 126 Water St., in downtown Boyne City, following the event. Zombies who are interested in participating may call 231-582-0486 to pre-register. Zombie registration is $10 and is limited to the first 50 callers.   • Boo! HALLOWEEN PARADE
    Cindi Malin, owner of Cindifranco's Cool Stuff, is busy organizing Boyne City’s second annual Halloween parade for all who are interested. "It's community spirit for the children, and it's always fun to see what people do for the kids on Halloween," said Malin, "Come on down, get dressed up and march with us, or bring a chair and watch the parade." The parade will be on Oct. 31 at 4:30 p.m. (line-up starts at 4) and will start at Pine Street, proceeding from Lake to Water to Park street. Anyone interested in donating candy to the Trunk or Treat can contact Cindi at 582-0526 or simply drop off donations at CindiFranco’s, 309 S Lake Street.
