  • RUBBISH COLLECTION will resume for three weeks in the City of Boyne City Sept. 7 and 8. The first pickups will take place in areas on and south of Main Street on Wednesdays, Sept. 7, 14 and 21.   • EMERGENCY FOOD AND SHELTER GRANTS AWARDED
    Char-Em United Way and the Local Board of the federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program recently completed distribution of over $44,073 in federal funds to support local food and shelter programs in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties. United Way is the local administrator of the federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP).

  • LABOR DAY CAR SHOW
    Kiwanis of Boyne City has taken over organizing the annual Labor Day Weekend Car Show, which is expected to bring more than 100 classic cars to town on Sept. 2 and 3. On Friday night, many of the cars will be on display on downtown streets during the final Stroll the Streets of the year from 6 to 9 p.m. On Saturday, the Car Show will be at Veterans Park with registration at 8 a.m. and the show beginning at 9. Model car contests, car games, car music and food will be available throughout the day. Immediately after the car show, at about 3 p.m. Saturday, the classic cars will parade through downtown Boyne City. Advance registration for the car/motorcycle show is $20, or $25 on Sept. 3.   • DRAG RACES
    The annual Boyne City Police Department drag races are almost here. Side-by-side, eighth-mile drag races will be from noon-6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, at the Boyne City Airport, 1048 E. Main St. in Boyne City. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Boyne City Airport and the Boyne City Police Department. Entry fees are $30 for cars, trucks and motorcycles, while pit passes are $15. Spectators will be charged a $10 admission fee, though those under 12 years will be admitted for free.   • HORTON BAY EVENTS
    On Monday, Sept. 5, the Horton Bay United Methodist Church will host its annual Labor Day Pig Roast from 4 to 7 p.m., with entertainment by the Rowlands. Also available will be booths with crafts and “homegrown goodies” from 1 to 7. Admission is $9 for adults, $5 for children ages 5 to 10, and free for those under 5. Then, at 8 p.m. Horton Bay will host its annual Labor Day Candlelight Bridgewalk with entertainment by Michelle Chenard. At dusk participants will attempt to walk the great Horton Bay Bridge by candlelight. Those that make it across will receive a certificate of accomplishment and a free frozen chocolate banana from the Horton Bay Store. Bring yourself, friends, and family as there is no better way to end this summer then to walk the Horton Bay Bridge under the stars and candlelight.

  • “BOYNE CITY REMEMBERS” will be the theme for the sixth Annual Boyne City Community Potluck Picnic at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, September 11th, which is the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in 2001. Opening ceremonies of the picnic will honor local first responders - police, fire and ambulance staff. Hot dogs and barbecue beef sandwiches will be provided. Bring a dish or two to share. After the picnic, there will be fun events for all ages, including music, children’s games and face painting and a softball game featuring the Boyne City Fire Department playing the East Jordan Fire Department.   • CHARLEVOIX COUNTY CROP WALK
    Come rain or shine, area residents are rearing up for the 28th annual Charlevoix County CROP Walk slated for Saturday, September 24th at 9:00 a.m. The six mile walk will commence from three Charlevoix County locations. Those from East Jordan will meet at Elm Pointe. Boyne City participants will assemble at Whiting Park while Charlevoix walkers will gather at the Charlevoix Middle School. The event will conclude at the Congregational Church in Ironton where lunch will be provided to all who participated. All area churches and individuals are invited to join in this annual fund raiser. Organized locally, the Charlevoix County CROP Walk has set a goal to recruit 125 walkers to raise $20,000. The funds will be used to combat hunger here in our own communities are well as to help others around the world. Twenty-five percent of all funds raised will be returned to Charlevoix County to support the work of The Good Samaritan of Ellsworth, Care and Share in East Jordan, the Charlevoix Food Pantry, Boyne Fall Food Pantry as well as the Seventh Day Adventist and Trinity Pentecostal Church of God in Boyne City. Last year, over 116 walkers and volunteers raised more than $19,500. Of those funds, $4,878 was distributed among local food pantries. The remaining contributions were used to fight hunger and to provide better sanitation for communities in the United States as well as those around the world.   • “Bushel of Family Fun” Harvest Festival
    Friske’s Farm Market is planning its own Harvest Festival from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at 10743 N. US 31 in Atwood. They are celebrating this year's fall season and bountiful fruit harvest as well as Grandma Friske's 80th birthday. Enjoy a tractor-drawn wagon tour through Friske Orchards during the apple harvest. "Farmer Bill" will be serving up wagon rides every half hour starting at 10 a.m. til 4 p.m where you'll enjoy a live informative presentation about the orchards while soaking in the sweet, intoxicating aromas and colors of fresh apples. Scheduled events include:
