  • Avalanche ice-skating rink opens for season
    The City of Boyne City has opened the ice-skating rink at Avalanche Preserve Recreation Area, located at 1019 Wilson Street. The rink has lights, a warming house and free loaner skates and plastic sleds. That rink is open and supervised from 4 to 9 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends and school holiday periods. The warming house will be closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day but the park is still open for sledding and skating, and restrooms are accessible.
  • Winter Tai Chi Classes in Boyne City
    Tai Chi Classes will begin this January in two locations in Boyne City. Classes will run on Wednesdays from January 5 through February 23. Morning classes will be at the Boyne District Library in the downstairs Community Room. Evening Classes will be held at the Boyne Arts Collective.

This year’s event will be held Wednesday, February 2 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Petoskey. Project Connect connects people in need with a range of health and human services needed to improve their lives.

  • Volunteers Needed for Project Connect
    It will take a lot of volunteers to put on the fourth annual Charlevoix-Emmet-Antrim Project Connect. which will be held Wednesday, February 2 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Petoskey. Char-Em United Way is recruiting and placing volunteers to make the event a success. Project Connect connects people in need with a range of health and human services needed to improve their lives.

  • Young State Park plans snowshoe hikes
    A recent grant from the Charlevoix County Community Foundation will help Young State Park enhance its winter programming by purchasing new snowshoes and lanterns. The park has partnered with the No Boundaries store in Boyne City to procure the snowshoes, and staff from No Boundaries will provide assistance with the winter programs. Certified Heritage Interpreter Maureen Stine will guide the free and educational snowshoe hikes for park visitors. These hikes are geared toward families or anyone interested in learning more about the winter ecology in the park. The hikes will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturdays, Jan. 15 and 29 and Feb. 12, 19 and 26. Registration is not needed. There will be a warming fire and hot beverages to enjoy before and after the hike. When the hike is complete, visitors are invited to attend an information session on the sports of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. For more information, contact the park at 231-582-7523.   • Snowshoe by torchlight at Camp Daggett
    Experience the solitude of the wilderness as you snowshoe by torchlight at Camp Daggett from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29 and Feb. 26. Afterward, come in from the cold for a cup of hot chocolate, freshly baked cookies and to warm-up by the crackling fire in camp's beautiful main lodge. This event promotes all that Camp Daggett offers children and community. Buy raffle tickets with all proceeds going to Camp Daggett. Admission is free, donations are encouraged, and snowshoes are available for all ages.

  • Meet Congressman Benishek
    Area residents are invited to a "Meet the Congressman" event for newly elected Congressman Dan Benishek from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, at Boyne City Hall, 319 N. Lake St., Boyne City.Benishek, a former surgeon, is from Crystal Falls in the Upper Peninsula. He represents Michigan's first Congressional District, which includes the Upper Peninsula and the northern Lower Peninsula.   • Chocolate-Covered Boyne
    It may be cold and windy, but it will also be sweet in Boyne City for the third annual Chocolate-Covered Boyne. Sponsored by the Main Street Program and the Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce, the goal for this year's event is to make it "sweeter" and "livelier" than ever. "Chocolate-Covered Boyne" in downtown Boyne City will take place Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11-12. The event has a combined chocolate/Valentine theme and there will be tastings (food and drink) of chocolate treats and goodies, special chocolate desserts; displays of romantic novels and cookbooks featuring chocolate. The library will be having a children's story hour, in addition to an appropriately themed book display. Several demonstrations with chocolate are also being planned.   • RAVEN HILL DISCOVERY CENTER
    On Saturday, February 12th from noon to 4 pm, families visiting Raven Hill Discovery Center will get to watch Rube Goldberg Devices in action. Using the laws of motion and simple machines to make work easier OR in Rube Goldberg's case - harder, families can get to experience a little about Rube Goldberg, famous for his cartoons of very complicated machines doing simple tasks.Thanks to a grant awarded by the Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, the Center will offer FREE ADMISSION and special science activities for families on the second Saturday of each month in 2011. Bring the whole family "team" OR make it a special event for parent and child. There are fun problem-solving demos & activities to fit various ages, abilities and interests every month. Family groups can strengthen creative & critical thinking skills by trying a different science challenge each month, plus enjoy the museum, animals and outdoor exhibits.   • ANDREWS UNIVERSITY GYMNICS, an acro-sports team of 40 college students, will be coming to Boyne City on Saturday, Feb.12. They will be presenting a spectacular acro-sports performance at Boyne City High School at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free, however, donations are appreciated.

  • BAC STAGE CONCERT Series continues at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, with three performers, Gordon Howie, Kelly Shively and Michael Lee. Concerts are held the second and fourth Sunday of the month at the Boyne Arts Collective, 210 S. Lake St. Admission is $5. The nearby BBQ Restaurant, 151 Ray St., offers a 10 percent discount to anyone attending these concerts. The Feb. 27 concert will feature Pete Kehoe. Also, the Arts Collective hosts an Open Acoustic Jam every Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to noon. Everyone is welcome to perform or listen.   • MSU Jazz Orchestra coming to Boyne City
    The Crooked Tree Arts Center presents the Michigan State University Jazz Orchestra at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18 in the Boyne City Performing Arts Center. The 19-piece Jazz Orchestra, also known as The Be-Bop Spartans, is a young, swinging college band playing the repertoire of the great jazz masters as well as a wide range of soul, swing, blues, and gospel. TICKETS are $15 for Crooked Tree Arts Center members, $20 for non-members and $5 for students.   • Winterfest adds music and Snowman Contest
    Winterfest will return to downtown Boyne City on Saturday, Feb. 19. New to the festival this year will be "Stroll the Stores" with live music inside a number of stores and restaurants, and a Snowman Contest for homes and businesses. Everything in the family-friendly Winterfest is free, including frozen turkey bowling, frozen fish toss, broom ball, smoosh racing, a Scavenger Hunt for teams of up to eight people at 6 p.m., and a Chili Cook-Off at 4:45. Chili Cook-Off contestants (businesses and individuals are welcome) should bring at least one gallon of prepared chili in a crock pot to Country Now & Then by 4:45 p.m. Chili will be judged by a panel of judges and a People's Choice vote. To enter Scavenger Hunt or Chili Cook-Off call the Boyne Area Chamber at 582-6222 or Country Now & Then/Up the Lazy River at 582-2355. Prizes will be awarded for the games, Snowman Contest, Scavenger Hunt and Chili Cook-Off.

    It’s almost time for the next Back Porch music event at the Front Porch Café in Ellsworth! Always held on the third Saturday of the month, this month we’ll gather in to the warm and cozy atmosphere of the Café on Feb. 19th.

    Beginning at 7:00 p.m., Rick Potter will share old favorite standards with his unique vocals, accompanying himself with guitar. Following Rick, Vasco Zucchiatti will use his voice and guitar to share favorite country, western and folk songs. Both musical gentlemen are from the area, and are sure to have you smiling, humming and singing along all evening! Following the two performers, we will circle-up for a jam session. Suggested donations are $5/individual, $10/family- all donations are for the scheduled performers. Light refreshments are available at no charge… smoke- and alcohol-free, family-friendly atmosphere.

  • Community invited to Tech Night at elementary school
    Boyne City Elementary School in conjunction with the PTO will be hosting a Technology Night on Tuesday, Feb. 22. “This will be an opportunity for us to highlight the many technology devices we are using to assist with instruction,” said Principal Fred Sitkins. “We have a great number of resources, many of which have been purchased through our PTO and this evening will be an opportunity for our parents and community to see how technology is changing the face of education. We will have about 30 student presenters and ample opportunities for participants to get their hands on a SMART Interactive White Board or iPads.” The evening begins at 6:30 in the Elementary School Cafeteria.

    A Spaghetti Benefit Dinner for the Boyne City Deacons Fund will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 1303 Boyne Ave. Admission is by donation. The Deacon's Fund is a joint project of the Boyne City Ministerial Association to assist people in need.
