The City of Boyne City has opened the ice-skating rink at Avalanche Preserve Recreation Area, located at 1019 Wilson Street. The rink has lights, a warming house and free loaner skates and plastic sleds. That rink is open and supervised from 4 to 9 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends and school holiday periods. The warming house will be closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day but the park is still open for sledding and skating, and restrooms are accessible.
Tai Chi Classes will begin this January in two locations in Boyne City. Classes will run on Wednesdays from January 5 through February 23. Morning classes will be at the Boyne District Library in the downstairs Community Room. Evening Classes will be held at the Boyne Arts Collective.

Char-Em United Way has made a special community allocation investment to meet critical needs. Over $33,000 from United Way’s Emergency Needs Fund has just been awarded to several local agencies.

Char-Em United Way is connecting volunteers with local opportunities to engage in service. One year ago, Char-Em United Way launched Volunteer Connections, a “virtual volunteer center”. Since its introduction, 53 local non-profit agencies have signed-on and provided community projects. Volunteer Connections has referred 172 citizens to these challenges.

Char-Em United Way’s 2011 Community Investment Allocation process has begun. Non-profit agencies which provide programs and services meeting the health and human service needs of Charlevoix and Emmet Counties are encouraged to submit a Letter of Intent to apply for funding.

It’s a FAMILY AFFAIR at Raven Hill Discovery Center this second Saturday in 2011—January 8th from noon to 4 pm. Thanks to a grant awarded by the Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, the Center will continue to offer free admission for families and special science activities on the second Saturday of each month from January to June in 2011, starting this Saturday, January 8th. Bring the whole family “team” OR make it a special event for parent and child. There will be fun problem-solving demos & activities to fit various ages, abilities and interests. In 2010, Second Saturday Science Days were sponsored by the Charlevoix County Community Foundation and over 1400 visitors took advantage of the free admission opportunities at Raven Hill Discovery Center. Once again family groups will be able to strengthen creative & critical thinking skills by exploring a different science concept each month, plus enjoy the museum, animals and outdoor exhibits. The focus this Saturday will be Magic of Magnets. Learn how magnets work, how they are used and how they relate to electricity. Raven Hill Discovery Center is the only place in northern Lower Michigan where children and adults can link science, history & the arts with hands-on activities and explorations both indoors and outdoors. Connections emerge through classes, exhibits and facilities that provide opportunities for all ages to learn, create, grow and play. Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands offer free skiing to locals on SundayIn appreciation of local residents' patronage and support of its resorts and operations, Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands Resort are pleased to offer a full day of FREE skiing and snowboarding to residents of Charlevoix, Cheboygan and Emmet counties this Sunday, Jan. 9. Free access to the 114 downhill trails at Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands, plus the parks, pipes and cross-country trails at both resorts is available 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Eligible residents need only show their driver's license or other form of identification with proof of residency at the resorts' lift ticket windows to receive a free lift ticket for the day. Ages 15 and under can ski and snowboard free during Community Appreciation Day if accompanied by an adult with proof of local residency. Other discounts and specials are offered on Sunday and full details can be viewed online.

The Back Porch Concert series will be hosting an evening of poetry with special guest, poet-bard Terry Wooten. Terry is the host poet of Stone Circle in the warmer months. He has also been active in area schools, working with students to interview seniors and veterans. The students then use the collected stories to create poetry and other presentations. Terry has also been sharing his poetry and excerpts of interviews from area citizens through a popular column in the Record-Eagle newspaper.
From 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., he will share from his memorized collection of poems (classic, contemporary and original compositions) for all ages. Following Terry’s performance, we will open the stage for people to share music and poetry “in the round”.
As always, the Back Porch events are held at the Front Porch Café on Main St. in Ellsworth. Donations at the door are for the scheduled performer (suggested: $5 individual, $10 family). Light refreshments are available at no additional charge. For additional information: 231-622-2305.

A recent grant from the Charlevoix County Community Foundation will help Young State Park enhance its winter programming by purchasing new snowshoes and lanterns. The park has partnered with the No Boundaries store in Boyne City to procure the snowshoes, and staff from No Boundaries will provide assistance with the winter programs. Certified Heritage Interpreter Maureen Stine will guide the free and educational snowshoe hikes for park visitors. These hikes are geared toward families or anyone interested in learning more about the winter ecology in the park. The hikes will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturdays, Jan. 15 and 29 and Feb. 12, 19 and 26. Registration is not needed. There will be a warming fire and hot beverages to enjoy before and after the hike. When the hike is complete, visitors are invited to attend an information session on the sports of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. For more information, contact the park at 231-582-7523. Vander Ark was the lead singer and principal songwriter for The Verve Pipe, which has sold more than 3 million albums worldwide and produced a string of hit singles, including the #1 song "The Freshman." Elected officials from around Charlevoix County will meet Monday to share ideas, current and future concerns and successes. The first Charlevoix County Elected Leadership Summit will be held at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 31, at the Boyne Area Senior Center, 411 East Division St. The goal is to enhance the connections between government entities. Boyne City, teaming up with the Charlevoix County Michigan Townships Association, will host this first summit. The meeting will include representatives from the county's 15 townships, three cities and the county.
