  • Information and Referral Hotline Expands
    Access for northern Michigan residents to the national 2-1-1 Information and Referral system has expanded. On 2-11-2011, residents from Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, and Leelanau Counties joined those in Charlevoix and Emmet Callers who can get non-emergency health and human services information by calling the toll-free hotline, 1-877-211-LAKE (5253).

  • United Way “Check-off” Aids Local Communities
    While you fill out your 2010 Michigan tax return forms, don’t forget to “check off” for the United Way. This year, Michigan residents can use their tax returns to easily donate to the United Way Fund, which was created to help low to moderate income Michigan families with basic needs like food, clothing and shelter.

    The Char-Em United Way is sponsoring an Alternative Spring Break focusing on area high school and college students.  We have coordinated several projects with local non-profit organizations and now we need volunteers! “You don’t have to travel to a foreign country to have an alternative Spring Break experience,” points out Lisa Luebke, United Way Program Assistant. “This project gives you the opportunity to stay home and help right here in Charlevoix and Emmet counties. You can make a difference, have fun and live united.”

  • Raven Hill Discovery Center
    Join Raven Hill Discovery Center for its continuing free Second Saturday Science Series on April 9, from noon to 4 p.m. Thanks to a grant awarded by the Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, the Center offers free admission and special science activities for families on the second Saturday of the month. There will be fun problem-solving demos and activities to fit various ages, abilities and interests every month. Family groups can strengthen creative and critical thinking skills by trying different science challenges, plus enjoy the museum, animals and outdoor exhibits. The focus in April will be “Sounds of Music.” Learn about vibrations and pitch. Come explore and enjoy a variety of sound waves and unique musical instruments. And watch for Second Saturday Science and FREE (Families Reaching for Educational Experiences) on other weekend days in 2011.

  • BAC STAGE CONCERT
    Series continues at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 10, with the Hand-Me-Downs, an acoustic duo founded by husband and wife Lara and Erik VanHorn. The Hand-Me-Downs bring a sweet and organic sound to Northern Michigan, creating music infused with folk, blues, and country, Concerts are held the second and fourth Sunday of the month at the Boyne Arts Collective, 210 S. Lake St. Admission is $5. The April 24 concert will feature Michael Lee Seiler. Also, the Arts Collective hosts an Open Acoustic Jam every Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to noon.     In celebration of National Volunteer Week, April 10-16, Char-Em United Way is giving a special thank you to over 100 volunteers that have joined us in the past year. These individuals include Board and committee members, office and technical volunteers, Citizen Review Panel members, and Workplace Campaign Coordinators. This is in addition to the over 200 volunteers that donated 644 hours to Project Connect making this community event possible again this year.

  • Boyne Expo and Taste of Boyne
    This "Business After Hours on steroids" will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at the old Carter's store, 1315 Boyne Avenue (M-75 South). Last year's expo was one of Northern Michigan's largest business networking events with 1,000 people attending. This year's event will include 87 exhibitors, and all booth space is sold out. ADMISSION is $5, which includes a Taste Card to sample each of the Taste of Boyne participants. THE TASTE OF BOYNE has grown to 13 participants
