  • It’s time to register for July 4th parade and running races
    The Boyne City 4th of July Festival features a giant parade at 10 a.m., evening fireworks plus a dozen other activities including the 34th Annual Waterside Arts and Crafts Show, 2-mile and 10k running races, a wacky raft race and duck race in the Boyne River, lots of food, plus children's games and a pie-eating contest. The festival is centered in Veterans Memorial Park on the shore of beautiful Lake Charlevoix. There will be live music in the park all day. Info and schedule: 231-582-6222 or www.boyne4thofjuly.com.

  • Final Chance to Request a Project for Day of Caring
    There is still time left for non-profit organizations, schools, and government agencies to submit a project request for Day of Caring. Deadline for applications is Friday, July 15. Project “wish-lists” will be filled by volunteers on the day of the event, Thursday, September 15, 2011.

  • LIBRARY ADVENTURE CLUB Kids ages 6-13 are invited to Boyne District Library for "Adventure Club" every Thursday from 5-6 p.m. in the Community Room. Upcoming adventures include visits from the National Weather Service on July 14 and Friends of the Boyne River on July 21.

  • FREE WOOD CHIPS
    Boyne City’s north Boyne compost site on Robinson Street has wood chips that are available free to the public. There is no limit on the quantity; however, you must make your own arrangements for loading and hauling. This does not include black dirt; wood chips only.

    Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division is holding free, four-hour boating safety classes at 9 a.m. June 25 at Walloon Lake Country Club, 2 p.m. June 28 at Sommerset Point Yacht Club in Boyne City, and 2 p.m. July 11 at the Jordan Valley District Library in East Jordan. These classes are required for 12-to-16-year-olds (and in some cases for their parents) to operate a boat or jet-ski.   • ATEN PLACE
    An evening with three outstanding Michigan Singer-Songwriters will set the stage for the second Aten Place Summer Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 2. Boyne City ‘s Robin Lee Berry will join southeast Michigan-based Dave Boutette and John Latini. Each artist has built an individual reputation and following of their own, and will share their musical talents in a ‘singers-in-the-round’ style concert. A three for one treat, and a great way to start the long Holiday weekend. Tickets are $25 for two and $15 for singles. Tickets go on sale at 6:30 p.m. the day of the concert, with performances beginning at 7:30 p.m. Aten Place is a non-profit endeavor, and no food or beverage is sold on the premises. Many patrons bring snacks and desserts to share at intermission. There is also a covered picnic pavilion for those who wish to come early and enjoy the grounds and peaceful setting.   • WELLNESS WEDNESDAY
    Charlevoix Area Hospital's next "Wellness Wednesday" will be from 8 to 11 a.m. on July 6. The Wellness Wednesday Health Screens include: Total Cholesterol, HDL, ratio, and Glucose levels, Body Mass Index (BMI) score, Fat Percentage, and a Blood Pressure reading. No fasting required. Cost for the service is $12. Participants will also receive a blood pressure log and pedometer as well as all test results at the time of the screen. Walk-ins are welcome. Circle of Strength Cancer Support Group also meets from 10:30 a.m. to noon on the first Wednesday of every month at the hospital.

After many years of their own individual music making, guitarists Jerry and Ryan Younce have fused their musical energy to create a unique father-son instrumental duo.   • 8th annual Boyne Thunder: Benefit boating event provides fun-filled weekend while helping children
    Speed, excitement and fun returns to northern Michigan for the eighth annual Boyne Thunder Poker Run on July 8 and 9 in Boyne City. This unique boating event is a fund-raiser for Camp Quality and showcases high performance boats roaring through the waters of Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan on a 90-mile excursion. Card stops during the journey across gorgeous Lake Michigan include Harbor Springs, Beaver Island and Bay Harbor, where participants are treated to lunch at a world-class development on the shore of Lake Michigan. They wrap up their day on the water with a gathering at Sommerset Pointe, a beautiful waterfront development near Boyne City and one of the event’s major sponsors. The day concludes with a dinner at Veterans Park where participants play their cards to see who has the best hand. The Poker Run, which starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from the Boyne City Marina, is the highlight of the weekend but the event offers so much more.     Jeremy Kittel is rapidly earning a reputation as one of the nation’s most creative young musicians. Classically trained, he grew up in the Irish, folk and jazz music scenes of Ann Arbor and Detroit. As a youth he often traveled to Ireland and Scotland to further his studies of traditional music. In addition to performing with his own band and as a soloist with orchestras, Jeremy tours worldwide as the newest member of the Grammy-winning Turtle Island Quartet. Jeremy and his band will perform a 7:30 concert at Aten Place in Boyne Falls on Saturday, July 16.     No Boundaries is holding a Bike Swap and Consignment Sale Saturday and Sunda, July 16-17, at their store at 126 Water St., Boyne City. Bring your old, unused, outgrown, under-loved bicycle today, Friday. The bike professionals will evaluate and value the bicycle. Bikes will be displayed and sold at the store this weekend. For bikes that sell, the seller will receive 90% of the selling price in store credit at No Boundaries, or 75% of the selling price in cash back. 10% of sales will go to Challenge Mountain and their efforts to provide activities and programs to children with special needs. For bikes that do not sell. bikes must be picked up by Tuesday, July 19. All remaining bicycles will be donated to the Challenge Mountain Resale Store. For information call 231-582-3200.
