  • Boyne City resumes rubbish collection in September
    The City of Boyne City's curbside rubbish collection program will resume next week. The city offered this service for a four-week period in June, and the fall collection period four-week period begins Sept. 1 and 1. The first pickups will take place in areas on and south of Main Street on Wednesdays, Sept. 1, 8, 15 and 22. Areas north of Main Street will be picked up on Thursdays, Sept. 2, 9, 16 and 23. Items that may be left for collection include furniture, appliances, clothing and construction waste (no garbage or yard waste). The total each week may not exceed two cubic yards.   • Michigan State Employees Charitable Campaign Kicks Off
    The Michigan State Employees’ Charitable Campaign (SECC) kicked off September 13 and runs to October 15. This year’s campaign incorporates "Community Connect," an opportunity for state employees to volunteer at many of the local agencies included in the State Employees Campaign.   • SENIOR PICNIC
    The Charlevoix County Commission on Aging presents the 31st Annual Senior Picnic from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, at the Harvest Barn in East Jordan. The event features entertainment, a guest speaker from Project Fresh, prizes, fun, food and more. Get your tickets at your local Senior Center or the Commission on Aging office, 237-0103. Charlevoix County Transit buses will be running with free transportation to and from the picnic. Call 582-6900 for your bus reservation.

  • Rotary Labor Day Car Show
    The Rotary Club of Boyne City will bring 200 classic cars to town on Sept. 3 and 4 for their annual Labor Day Car Show. On Friday night, many of the cars will be on display on downtown streets during the final Stroll the Streets of the year from 6 to 9 p.m. On Saturday, the Car Show will be at Veterans Park with registration at 8 a.m. and the show beginning at 9. Model car contests, car games and food will be available throughout the day. Advance registration for the car/motorcycle show is $15, or $20 on Sept. 4.   • Leader of the Pack
    Immediately after the car show, at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, the Leader of the Pack Motorcycle and Car Cruise will be held, benefiting the Charlevoix Area Humane Society. Entry fee is $20 including barbecue, music and awards. Call the Humane Society at 582-6774 for more information about the cruise.

    Featuring weekly concerts in a 90-year-old oak-frame barn near Boyne Falls. The last two shows of the season will be Daniel Boling on Aug. 28, and Cairn to Cairn on Sept. 4. Tickets are $25 for two and $15 for singles and go on sale at 6:30 p.m. the day of the concert, with performances beginning at 7:30.   • Royal Craft Show at Castle Farms
    On Labor Day Weekend the grounds and buildings of Castle Farms will be the host to one of Michigan's most prestigious craft shows and will feature only the finest arts and crafts that can be found. Admission is $3 per person with children under 12 free. Food is available at a nominal charge. Pets are not allowed. The event will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Self-guided tours are available for the rest of the Castle and Gardens at $4 each. Details . . .

  • Labor Day Drag Races
    The Annual Boyne City Police Department Drag Race will be blazing through the Boyne City Airport on Sunday, Sept. 5 from noon to 6 p.m. Cars and motorcycles will be racing; drivers may be anyone who wishes to race for a fee of $30. Admission is $10 for spectators; children under 10 are admitted free. Gates open to racers at 8:30 a.m. for registration and tech inspections. The event is cosponsored by the Boyne Valley Lions, and proceeds benefit the Airport and Police Department. For information and registration, click here or call 582-6611.

  • Labor Day Bridge Walk, pig roast in Horton Bay
    The Horton Bay Bridge Authority has approved the 29th Annual Labor Day Candlelight Bridgewalk. The grand event begins and ends in Mary's backyard in the Horton Bay Financial District, 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6, Labor Day Evening. Entertainment will be provided. Those brave souls who successfully cross the 14-1/2 ft. bridge will receive a Certificate of Accomplishment. Under one million participants are expected to attend.     * A pig roast dinner will precede the bridge walk on Sept. 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Horton Bay United Methodist Church. The cost is $9 per plate for an adult and $5 for children 5-10 years; any child under 5 is free. There will be music by the Rowlands, craft booths and homegrown goodies all day. All are welcome.

  • Meeting planned for Highway M-75 corridor study
    Area residents and visitors are encouraged to attend the next in a series of visioning meetings the Highway M-75 corridor at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7 at Boyne Valley Township Hall, 2489 Railroad Street, Boyne Falls. Residents and public officials will be discussing feedback from the last public meeting, results from an online survey, and determining the next steps for ongoing community cooperation and the implementation of the vision. The City of Boyne City, in partnership with Boyne Valley Township and Wilson Township, received a "Partnerships for Change" grant administered through the Land Information Access Association. In recent months the three municipalities have been working together and seeking public input to develop a common vision for the M-75 corridor. Several public hearings, goal-setting sessions and a survey were conducted. Click here see the survey results. Once the vision and goals are finalized each community will take steps to implement the vision into their own master plans and ordinances.   • Household Hazardous Waste drop-off
    Paint, antifreeze, kerosene, household batteries and aerosols are among the types of household waste that residents can drop off with the Charlevoix County Recycling Program on Saturday, Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents should call 582-6193 between Aug. 30 and Sept. 11 to make an appointment to bring in their waste and up to three electronic devices.   • Community picnic at Veterans Park
    The fifth annual Boyne City Community Picnic will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, at Veterans Memorial Park. All area residents and their guests are invited. Boyne Mountain will provide sloppy joes and hot dogs. Everyone is asked to bring a dish to pass. The picnic will include entertainment by keyboard player Roger Hartson and the East Jordan and Boyne City line dancers. Girl Scouts will be doing face painting for children and the Kiwanis Club will provide children's games. At 3 p.m. the Boyne City firefighters will play East Jordan in softball.   • Boyne Area Gymnastics and Dance classes start
    Boyne Area Gymnastics and Dance, a non-profit organization, will begin its fall session the week of Sept. 13. Classes are offered at their 7,200 square foot facility which includes both a gymnasium and a dance/fitness studio. The gym contains a spring floor, tumble trak, tumbling pit, parallel bars and so much more. A variety of programs are provided and include activities for both children and adults. The programs offered are kinder ballet, ballet 1, modern, hip hop, ballroom, Turbo Kick, Step Aerobics, Zumba, Yoga and lots of gymnastics, including: tumble tots, kinder gym, boys gym, cheer tumbling, open gym and many levels of gymnastics classes.   • Char-Em United Way
    September 14th is our 7th annual Day of Caring in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties. Approximately 40 projects will be completed for low income seniors, nonprofits and governmental entities. Last year more than 600 volunteers came out to help out and lend a hand and we expect similar results tomorrow. Day of Caring was developed as a way to give back to your community and lend a helping hand to those in need, including nonprofit agencies who provide services to area residents and don’t have the necessary staff to get it all done on their own.   • Humane Society to host Business After Hours
    The Charlevoix Area Humane Society will host the next Boyne Area Chamber Business After Hours at 614 Beardsley St. from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16. Subway is cosponsoring the mixer and will provide hors d'oeuvres. The Humane Society is open from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (closed on Wednesdays and Sundays).     The Boyne City Firefighters have booked country music star Collin Raye for their annual concert at the Performing Arts Center at Boyne City High School. Special guests for this concert are Candi Carpenter & Bobby Tomberlin. General admission tickets for the Sept. 25 shows at 4 and 7 p.m. are $24 and are available at the Chamber office, 28 S. Lake St.
