Great Lakes Energy, partnering with Emmet County Recycling, is a community drop off point for shoes to be distributed to the people of Haiti.
There will be a box in the back lobby as well as one in the front, public lobby, so anyone, member or not, can drop off footwear.
The shoes can be new or gently used; please use your discretion in determining if they still have good life left in them. This time of year, great deals can be found on sandals and flip flops that are left over from the summer at just about any store, so a little bit of money can go a long way to help these people. On February 4, they will be delivering the shoes to Emmet Recycling.
We are on a short time frame, as Emmet Recycling hopes to have a semi on the road February 5, 2010. We not only need shoes, but also help in getting the word out that they are a drop off point.

Are you interested in what the future holds for Boyne City? Are you interested in shaping the city's future? If so, you are invited to join community leaders and city staff at a City-Wide Goal-Setting Session at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19 in the Parish Hall at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, 1303 Boyne Avenue (M-75 South). This meeting is a great opportunity to share suggestions, ask questions, hear what your fellow citizens are thinking, and receive updates on the status of previously established goals. Facilitators will be Andy Hayes of the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance and Dean Solomon of Michigan State University Extension Service. Input received at this meeting will assist the City Commission and other city boards and commissions in determining the short-term and long-term goals for our community. These goals will give the City Commission and staff direction on the community's priorities, and where to focus the city's resources. If you are not able to attend, you may submit suggestions to: City of Boyne City, 319 North Lake St., Boyne City, MI 49712 or by emailing cgrice@boynecity.com by Jan. 15. For additional information or questions, contact City Hall 231-582-6597.
As a follow-up to the City of Boyne City community goal-setting session on January 19, 2010, the city is conducting a short survey. We want to gather more input from all residents - those who did and did not attend the meeting. Results from the goal-setting session and this survey will help guide decisions important to the future of Boyne City. Please respond by 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 8, 2010.
