  • City rubbish collection
    The City of Boyne City's curbside rubbish collection program is slated to begin May 26-27. The city will now be offering this service for a four-week period in the spring and a four-week period in the fall. The first pickups will take place in areas on and south of Main Street on Wednesdays, May 26 and June 2, 9 and 16; and Sept. 1, 8, 15 and 22. Areas north of Main Street will be picked up on Thursdays May 27 and June 3, 10 and 17; and Sept. 2, 9, 16 and 23. Items that may be left for collection include furniture, appliances, clothing and construction waste - the total each week may not exceed two cubic yards. Items that will not be picked up include garbage, recyclable materials and lawn and garden waste. Materials should be placed on the street before 7 a.m. on pickup day or after 5 p.m. the day before.   • CENSUS DEADLINE The Census is here and everyone should have returned their census forms by now. If your Census form was lost, damaged, or never received, call 866-872-6868 to request a new form. A census worker will be sent to all households that do not return the census form. Sending a census worker to a home costs taxpayers approximately $56; the cost of mailing the form back is 42 cents.
  • Local PRI continues to serve community
    Gaylord, Mich. - On June 18, Department of Human Services Director Ismael Ahmed made a stop in Gaylord to give a presentation to the public busting the myths behind welfare. One of his first comments during this presentation was a thank you to the many individuals responsible for the strong Poverty Reduction Initiatives in this area of Northern Michigan. Read more . . .

  • BUILDING TRADES OPEN HOUSE
    The Boyne City High School Building Trades Program will be hosting an Open House on Wednesday, June 2 from 4 to 8 p.m. The newly built home is located at 422 McLean Street near the Airport. From downtown take Boyne Avenue to Main Street, follow Main Street to McLean Street, go right on McLean to the last home on the right. Come and enjoy a snack and meet some of the students who have worked on this project since last September. This 3,000+ square foot home features 5 bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths and an attached two car garage.
  • COMMUNITY GARDEN
    The City of Boyne City will hold an informational meeting on its new Community Garden at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 2 in the North Conference Room at City Hall. The garden is located at the corner of Robinson and Court Streets and will accommodate plots ranging from 10-by-10 feet to 20-by-20 feet. Call Karen for information at 582-6597.
  • WELLNESS WEDNESDAY
    from 9 to 4 Wednesday, June 2 at Charlevoix Area Hospital in the Solarium. Wellness Wednesday Health Screens include: Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL ratio, and Glucose levels, Body Mass Index (BMI) score, Fat Percentage, and a Blood Pressure reading. No fasting required. Cost for the service is $12. Participants will also receive a blood pressure log and pedometer as well as all test results at the time of the screen. A Registered Nurse will adapt health consultation and educational materials to individual results.   • Forum on next superintendent
    Area residents will have an opportunity to help the Boyne City School Board identify characteristics they want in a superintendent during a community forum from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 7, in the high school Performing Arts Center. Superintendent Bob Alger announced last month he is leaving the district to assume the position of Director of Instructional Services with Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District. The school board has asked Char-Em to assist in the search. As part of the search process, the ISD will host a series of forums to gather input from the community and school personnel on what they want to see in a superintendent. At the forum, ISD personnel will go over the tentative timeframe to fill the position. Those unable to attend may direct comments via email to Dianne Litzenburger, Char-Em ISD, at litzd@charemisd.org. Meetings with school staff took place June 1.

  • FREE CLINIC BENEFIT
    Come to the auction Saturday, June 12, at the Boyne City Eagles Club, starting at 10 a.m., rain or shine. Listen to the "Singing Auctioneer" and pick up lots of great bargains. The auction is sponsored by the Boyne City United Methodist Church. The church has chosen the Boyne Area Free Clinic as an outreach project, and will be sharing the proceeds from the auction, equally with the clinic. Details.
  • The Young Americans
    The Young Americans bring their high-energy singing and dancing performance to the Boyne City Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 12. Tickets are on sale at the Boyne Area Chamber, Local Flavor and Country Now & Then. Admission is $20 for adults and $12 for students. Don't delay - there are less than 100 tickets remaining for the 600-seat facility. After a week of performances around Northern Michigan, the Young Americans begin their 33rd season of dinner theater at Boyne Highlands in Harbor Springs on June 25, continuing through Aug. 28.   • Make a Splash at the Boyne District Library
    Children are invited to "Make a Splash" during Boyne District Library's Summer Reading Program from June 15 to July 20. The library offers the perfect place to cool off this summer and explore the world of books and reading through water-themed activities, events and arts & crafts. Featured performers include Acting Up Theater Company at 10 a.m. on June 15; The Bubble Man at 10 a.m. on July 2; Drummunity at 10 a.m. on July 13; and The Balloon Meister at 10 a.m. on July 19. All ages are invited to the performances, which will take place in the library's Community Room. No registration is required, and there is no charge for any of the events.

    Families and water-lovers of all ages are invited to a Water Safety program, complete with a barbeque, on June 17 at 6 p.m. in the Community Room. Charlevoix County Sheriff's Marine Division will offer the program geared for all ages, including water safety, boater safety, law and etiquette. Complimentary hot dogs will be served after the program outside on the patio.

    For preschool children ages 3-5, several water-related programs are also offered on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. in the Community Room: "Story & Wonder Water Adventure Art" on June 22; "Story & Water Games" on June 29; and "What Lives in Water?" Story and Crafts on July 6. No registration is required.

    Elementary children ages 6-11 can attend programs on Tuesdays at 11 a.m.: "Water Games" in the library's garden on June 22; "What is Sand Made of?" Beach Sand art project on June 29; and "Book Scavenger Hunt" and Stuffed Fish art project on July 6. Registration is required and is limited to 25.

    Elementary and preschool children are invited to the "Finale" on July 20 from 1- 3 p.m. for a reading celebration, awards and a movie.

    "Make Waves at Your Library" is offered for 12-16 year-olds with something for everyone this summer. Add some color to your closet with "Tie-Dye Workshop" on June 23 from 3-5 p.m. Bring a white or light-colored t-shirt or other item to tie-dye.

    Learn about all the new and exciting YA books at the "Book Talk" on June 24 from 4-5 p.m. YA Librarian Jon Baughan will share some of his favorites and will also take suggestions for future library purchases.

    Other programs include: "Hemp Workshop" on June 30 from 1-3 p.m.; "Scavenger Hunt" on July 14 from 2-4 p.m.; and ending with "Luau Party" on Aug. 6 from 5-7 p.m. Also ongoing from June 30-July 30 is "Reading Squares," a game to win weekly prizes and/or a grand prize by completing activities on your reading square form available at the library beginning June 30.

  • HABITAT FUND-RAISER
    Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity will hold its 9th annual live and silent auction from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, June 18 at the Emmet County Fairgrounds Community Building.   • Pink Ribbon Ride will be held Saturday, June 19, raising money for breast cancer programs offered through Charlevoix Area Hospital and Northern Michigan Regional Hospital. The 8th annual ride begins in Veterans Memorial Park in Boyne City with registration at 7 a.m. for the 55-mile ride. Registration for the 7, 20 and 42-mile rides is held from 7:30 to 9 a.m.; riders start as soon as they have registered. Lunch is at 12:30 p.m. Registration and information.

    Musicians and music lovers are invited to join the fun as Gaeyle Gerrie-Boss and Master fiddler John Richey host the Boyne Sunday Session featuring Celtic and folk tunes at Local Flavor bookstore at 125 Water Street. from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, June 20. Musicians are asked to bring their own stools or chairs. The session is held the first and third Sunday of every month.     Charlevoix Area Hospital and its affiliate Boyne Rehabilitation Center will be co-hosting a free educational seminar on Fall Prevention Strategies at 7 p.m. June 23 in Classroom B at Charlevoix Area Hospital, 14700 Lakeshore Drive, Charlevoix. Topics include: Prevalence and consequences of falls, benefits of therapeutic exercise, home safety assessments, and referrals to reduce fall risk Speakers will include Candice Wiers, Physical Therapist and Carla Crockett, Occupational Therapy student and Tim Koetje from Airway Oxygen. This presentation is open to the public and is free of charge. Caregivers of the elderly may find this seminar to be of particular benefit.   • COUNTY WIDE BUSINESS AFTER HOURS
    Four Chambers of Commerce are joining together to sponsor a Regional Business After Hours networking extravaganza at the new One Water development on the waterfront in Boyne City on Wednesday, June 23. The Business After Hours will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and will feature networking among Chamber members from Boyne City, East Jordan, Charlevoix and Petoskey. More than 200 business people are expected to attend. Admission is $5 for members of any participating Chamber, or $10 for non-members. No RSVPs are necessary.

    Hors d'oeuvres will be provided by the new Café Santé restaurant, a casual, European-style bistro which is now open in the One Water development. The event will include a cash bar and entertainment by Pete Kehoe. In addition to Café Santé, One Water includes a 24-slip marina on Lake Charlevoix, Alpine Chocolat Haus, Kidd & Leavy Real Estate and administrative offices for Michigan Community Dental Clinics. A 37-room hotel will be built in the second phase of the development, which is owned by Catt Development of Gaylord.

  • LaBRECQUE BENEFIT
    A benefit Spaghetti Dinner & Silent Auction will be held for Kenneth LaBrecque at the Park of the Pines, 4094 Springwater Beach Road, off Charlevoix/Boyne City Road, on June 25 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Organizers are raising funds to help LaBrecque cover medical and other expenses that have occurred since he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in December.   • STROLL THE STREETS Stroll the Streets again will fill downtown Boyne City with music and fun every summer Friday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. from June 25 through Labor Day weekend. 2010 marks the seventh year for Stroll the Streets, which is organized by the Boyne City Main Street Program.   • SOBO Arts Festival
    The first annual SOBO Arts Festival will be a celebration of visual, performing, written and audible arts on June 25-26. The festival kicks off Friday with the second annual Wine Fest from 4 to 11 p.m. at 220 Lake Street, Stroll the Streets from 6 to 9, a swing dance workshop at 7 p.m. and Chris Bickley's Bay Area Big Band from 8 to 10 p.m. in front of Lake Street Market, Eyes on Main and CindiFranco's cool stuff. Saturday activities include a juried art fair on Lake Street from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. A variety of musical and theatrical performances will begin on the main stage and continue throughout the afternoon wrapping up with a hip-hop dance workshop and performance/dance featuring music from a local indie-rock ba nd at 5 p.m. A special area will feature a youth art display, craft workshops and a stage for performances including open mic for young performers. A Writers Corner will be feature writers presenting and signing their books. Artists will be demonstrating their work throughout the day in the art fair courtyard. Workshops highlighting dance, theater and instrument improv will be ongoing during the day. Wine tasting will continue from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at 220 Lake Street, which will also feature continuing entertainment from 6 to 11 p.m. The festival will also feature street food vendors, jugglers, buskers, mimes and kite flying. www.soboartsdistrict.org/

  • Evenings at the Gazebo concert schedule
    The Boyne Area Chamber has announced the schedule for another summer of Evenings at the Gazebo concerts beginning June 30. Concerts continue at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday through Aug. 25 at Old City Park, located at the corner of Park and River Streets. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets, but not your pets. This concert series is made possible by generous sponsors and in-park donations made on the night of each performance. The Chamber appreciates the ongoing organizing efforts of Cindy Kujawski.
