On Monday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m., songwriters, acoustic musicians, and the public are invited to a songwriter's circle and jam session at the Subway shop at 114 Water St. The weekly event allows composers to showcase their original compositions and see how other musicians can provide accompaniment and ideas on arrangement. The event is hosted by Boyne City recording artist and performer Dan Farrow. "Subway has a unique space in the rear of the store that is separate from the dining area. It is beautifully decorated, has its own entrance, and has great acoustics," says Farrow. In addition to studying the craft of songwriting, discussions about the business of music and successful publishing strategies will be part of the mix. The Boyne Valley Garden Club's "Garden of Good Eatin" cookbook is available at the Boyne Area Chamber for $15. The book includes more than 160 pages of recipes and cooking information, including sections for Appetizers and Beverages, Soups and Salads, Vegetables and Side Dishes, Main Dishes, Breads & Rolls, Desserts, Cookies and Candy, and This and That. The club, which was started in 1979, now has more than 100 members. Funds raised from the cookbook will help the club maintain 13 different flower beds around town. The garden club meets on the fourth Thursday of the month, March through November, at the Boyne District Library.
Two Boyne Teachers just completed a national 16-day institute and international certification to improve the teaching of writing in the nation's schools.

A North Central Michigan College-based writing project has received a $5,000 grant to help area teachers build stronger classroom cultural awareness and sensitivity in rural Michigan. The funding comes from the Rural Sites Network of the National Writing Project.

Children are invited to "Make a Splash" during Boyne District Library's Summer Reading Program from June 15 to July 20. The library offers the perfect place to cool off this summer and explore the world of books and reading through water-themed activities, events and arts & crafts. Featured performers include Acting Up Theater Company at 10 a.m. on June 15; The Bubble Man at 10 a.m. on July 2; Drummunity at 10 a.m. on July 13; and The Balloon Meister at 10 a.m. on July 19. All ages are invited to the performances, which will take place in the library's Community Room. No registration is required, and there is no charge for any of the events.
Families and water-lovers of all ages are invited to a Water Safety program, complete with a barbeque, on June 17 at 6 p.m. in the Community Room. Charlevoix County Sheriff's Marine Division will offer the program geared for all ages, including water safety, boater safety, law and etiquette. Complimentary hot dogs will be served after the program outside on the patio.
For preschool children ages 3-5, several water-related programs are also offered on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. in the Community Room: "Story & Wonder Water Adventure Art" on June 22; "Story & Water Games" on June 29; and "What Lives in Water?" Story and Crafts on July 6. No registration is required.
Elementary children ages 6-11 can attend programs on Tuesdays at 11 a.m.: "Water Games" in the library's garden on June 22; "What is Sand Made of?" Beach Sand art project on June 29; and "Book Scavenger Hunt" and Stuffed Fish art project on July 6. Registration is required and is limited to 25.
Elementary and preschool children are invited to the "Finale" on July 20 from 1- 3 p.m. for a reading celebration, awards and a movie.
"Make Waves at Your Library" is offered for 12-16 year-olds with something for everyone this summer. Add some color to your closet with "Tie-Dye Workshop" on June 23 from 3-5 p.m. Bring a white or light-colored t-shirt or other item to tie-dye.
Learn about all the new and exciting YA books at the "Book Talk" on June 24 from 4-5 p.m. YA Librarian Jon Baughan will share some of his favorites and will also take suggestions for future library purchases.
Other programs include: "Hemp Workshop" on June 30 from 1-3 p.m.; "Scavenger Hunt" on July 14 from 2-4 p.m.; and ending with "Luau Party" on Aug. 6 from 5-7 p.m. Also ongoing from June 30-July 30 is "Reading Squares," a game to win weekly prizes and/or a grand prize by completing activities on your reading square form available at the library beginning June 30.

Running races, 11 a.m. parade, arts & crafts fair, kids bouncers, fireworks, duck race, raft race, live music in Veterans Park. The Boyne City 4th of July Festival will include an expanded fireworks show this year, as the festival's organizing committee is increasing its fireworks budget by one-third, from $15,000 to $20,000. The 4th celebration draws thousands of people to town for a giant parade at 11 a.m., evening fireworks plus a dozen other activities. Highlights include the Waterside Arts and Crafts Show, 2-mile and 10k running races, a wacky raft race and duck race in the Boyne River, lots of food, live music and children's games. The festival is centered in Ve terans Memorial Park on the shore of Lake Charlevoix. Horton Creek will play behind the Chamber office on Friday night and on July 4th, there will be live music in the park all afternoon. "Stroll the Streets" kicks off the festive weekend from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 2 with bands, musicians and entertainers performing on the streets of downtown. Details . . .

The Boyne Area Chamber has announced the schedule for another summer of Evenings at the Gazebo concerts beginning June 30. Concerts continue at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday through Aug. 25 at Old City Park, located at the corner of Park and River Streets. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets, but not your pets. This week - BEVERLY MEYER - Dynamic voice accompanied by guitar, Beverly entertains young and old alike. A must-see for the whole family. Speed, excitement and smiles return to Boyne City for the seventh annual Boyne Thunder Poker Run on July 9 and 10. Boyne Thunder is a fund-raising event for Camp Quality and showcases high performance boats roaring through the waters of Lake Charlevoix and Lake Michigan on a 90-mile excursion. Card stops during the journey across gorgeous Lake Michigan include Beaver Island, Harbor Springs, Petoskey, and Bay Harbor, before returning to Boyne City. The start of the poker run is 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 10, from the Boyne City Marina. The poker run festivities on Saturday, July 10, include a Champagne Cruise for those who want to get an up-close view of the spectacular boats. On Saturday afternoon, you are invited to come aboard one of the yachts, generously donated for the day by area boat owners. Once aboard, you will be served beverages and hors d'oeuvres while you cruise about Lake Charlevoix, viewing all of the action from your vantage point on the water. Later, your yacht will join up with all of the other Champagne boats for a "raft off," which serves as the final card stop for the poker run.

A summer celebration will be held in honor of Raven Hill Discovery Center on Friday, July 16. Summer Magic 2010: Rock Round the Clock, sponsored in part by WCMU Public Radio, will take place on the grounds of Raven Hill. Tickets are $25 per person and reservations are encouraged. The Charlevoix County Human Society is hosting its fifth annual Poochfest on Saturday, July 17, at Veterans Park in Boyne City. You can help support homeless animals of Charlevoix County during a fun-filled day of canine demonstrations of agility-ability and athletic pursuits. The day begins with the 1.5-mile Parade of Paws along the waterfront, starting and ending in Veterans Park. The first 50 registrants who raise or donate at least $25 will receive a commemorative Poochfest 2010 gift. There will also be prizes and goodie bags for those who raise the most money to help the animals. The pup and owner who win the most contests will win gift certificates and the annual "Henry" Memoria l Trophy*donated in memory of Henry Fox, the much-loved and missed St. Bernard companion of Gail Fox. Compete in contests to entertain, amuse and show off your canine's particular abilities, including: Humane Society King and Queen, "Mutt-Minster" Best in Show, Best Canine Trick, Best Canine Vocal Performance, Best Frisbee/ Disc Catcher, Best Costume, Most Obedient Pup, Least Obedient Pup. Contests will be run in Ring #2 right after various demonstrations of canine work ethic and a "Meet the Breed" get-together showing off various purebred pooches. Ring #1 will run agility demonstrations throughout the day. Games are also part of the fun, including: Hand-Me-Down-Hound Race, Bean Bag Kitty Toss, Collar Toss and Cat-a-Pult Bobbing for Balls . Genesis Church is hosting an all-free "Family Fun Night" Sunday Night July 18 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Sunset Park, behind the Chamber cabin. There will be free food, inflatables, cotton candy, popcorn, and prizes. Music will be provided by DJ Experience and Tommy Tropic will be wrapping up the evening with another fun show. Genesis Church will be starting public worship services at the Boyne City Elementary School auditorium Oct. 10, at 11 a.m. Sunday mornings.

The Boyne Area and East Jordan Chambers of Commerce are cosponsoring a Candidates Forum at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, with seven candidates for State Representative, three for State Senate and two for County Commission. The races will be decided in the August 3 Primary Election. All of the candidates have confirmed their attendance. The forum will be held in the Boyne District Library Community Room, 201 E. The Kowalskes, Boyne's hometown family band, will perform at next week's Evenings at the Gazebo concert at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 21. The Boyne City Board of Education has selected two candidates to bring back for second interviews on Wednesday, July 21. The interviews are open to the public and will be held in the cafeteria/boardroom of the Early Childhood Building, 321 South Park Street. The interview schedule is:

* 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. - Peter Moss, Superintendent, Hart Public Schools, Hart
The board originally had 28 applications for the post, which is being vacated by Bob Alger, who is taking a position with Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District. Alger will continue to serve as interim superintendent until the position is filled. Five forums were held - three with school staff, one with administrators, and one for the community - to gather input on qualities the community is seeking in their superintendent.

The Charlevoix County History Preservation Society will present "History of Native American Basketry - Focus: Transitional Basketry in Michigan" . Speaker Karen Lewis, well-known exhibit curator and preservationist, has collected Native American baskets for many years. She will share some of her collection with us while giving a brief history of basketry, including construction methods and design. The focus will be on the transitional period in Michigan, when Native Americans went from making baskets for their own survival needs to creating them for the survival of others. The Dilworth Hotel Feasibility Study will be the main topic of discussion when the Boyne City City Commission meets Tuesday, July 27, at 7 p.m. Representatives of Quinn-Evans Architects of Ann Arbor and Hotel and Leisure Advisors of Cleveland will make a presentation on their draft report at the commission meeting and then answer questions from the public and city commissioners. Quinn-Evans was hired by the Boyne City Main Street / DDA Program to complete the feasibility study. The meeting will be held at city hall as part of the city commission’s regular meeting. The city has been working with Landmark Development of Boyne City in recent months. Landm ark currently has an option on the property and has plans to renovate the Dilworth as a historic boutique hotel, restaurant and banquet facility. The feasibility study is funded by the Boyne City Main Street / DDA and through a planning grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Boyne City performers and past high school Drama Department members are presenting an "Evening with the Phantom of the Opera" concert at the Boyne City Performing Arts Center for two nights, July 29 and 31. Mike Houser, New York actor and present BCHS Drama director, will sing the Phantom; Zachera Wollenberg, from Michigan State University's theatre department, will sing Christine; Shane Schmidt, a senior in the BCHS Drama Department, will sing Raoul, along with many local Boyne City theatre artists in other main roles and chorus. Donations will be accepte d for next year's BCHS Drama Department at intermission.
