  • Boyne Community Christmas
    The Boyne Area Community Christmas Baskets program is expecting that the need for assistance will be greater than ever this year, and the donation deadline is nearly here. Non-perishable, unwrapped food, toys, games, books, clothing and blankets may be dropped off at the Early Childhood Education Center on Pine Street from Dec. 1 through 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Checks may be made payable to Boyne Area Community Christmas, c/o Treasurer Eleanor West, 915 Robinson St. #15, Boyne City 49712. Those eligible for baskets may pick them up Dec. 17 from 3 to 6 pm. at the Early Childhood Center gym.

    * VOLUNTEER BOX PACKERS are needed from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 20, and additional help is needed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on distribution day, Dec. 21. For further information call Ruth Witenski at 582-3152 or Nancy Hosmer at 582-7165.

    * BLANKETS NEEDED - One of the biggest needs for the Community Christmas drive is for blankets. Country Now & Then/Up the Lazy River is collecting blankets at their store, located at 211 Water St.

  • Avalanche ice-skating rink opens for season
    The City of Boyne City has opened the ice-skating rink at Avalanche Preserve Recreation Area, located at 1019 Wilson Street. The rink has lights, a warming house and free loaner skates and plastic sleds. That rink is open and supervised from 4 to 9 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends and school holiday periods. The warming house will be closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day but the park is still open for sledding and skating, and restrooms are accessible.
  • Winter Tai Chi Classes in Boyne City
    Tai Chi Classes will begin this January in two locations in Boyne City. Classes will run on Wednesdays from January 5 through February 23. Morning classes will be at the Boyne District Library in the downstairs Community Room. Evening Classes will be held at the Boyne Arts Collective.

  • United Way Makes Year-End Community Investments
    Char-Em United Way has made a special community allocation investment to meet critical needs. Over $33,000 from United Way’s Emergency Needs Fund has just been awarded to several local agencies.

  • Volunteer Connections Marks One-Year Anniversary of Linking Citizens with Non-Profits
    Char-Em United Way is connecting volunteers with local opportunities to engage in service. One year ago, Char-Em United Way launched Volunteer Connections, a “virtual volunteer center”. Since its introduction, 53 local non-profit agencies have signed-on and provided community projects. Volunteer Connections has referred 172 citizens to these challenges.

  • Char-Em United Way Funding Applications Available
    Char-Em United Way’s 2011 Community Investment Allocation process has begun. Non-profit agencies which provide programs and services meeting the health and human service needs of Charlevoix and Emmet Counties are encouraged to submit a Letter of Intent to apply for funding.

    The Boyne Area Senior Center will have their annual Christmas Party at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 16. On Dec. 17 the seniors will be packing up food donations for delivery to the Community Christmas Basket Program.

  • MATT FRUGE BENEFIT
    A bake sale that will take place in three locations will come to the aid of a Boyne City native and military veteran who was recently injured on the job. A fundraiser is being planned for Dec. 17 to help the family with expenses while he recovers. Matt's Big Big Bake sale will take place at the Boyne City Eagles Club, and the Bill Marsh auto dealerships in Traverse City and Kalkaska. In addition to looking for baked good donations, organizers would like to collect items that could be used in silent auctions. Donated items should be dropped off at either of the two Bill Marsh locations or the Eagles Club by Dec.16.
