Buff Up Boyne, Boyne City's annual community-wide spring clean-up, is Saturday, May 1, from 9 a.m.-noon. The Boyne City Main Street Program, organizer of the event, is calling all residents, civic organizations, and schools to lend their shovels, rakes, and brooms to give Boyne City a shine during the annual cleanup. Volunteers will be sweeping, picking up trash and raking up debris from the city's sidewalks, parks, alleys, and along the waterfront. Volunteers are asked to meet at Sunset Park in downtown Boyne City next to the Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce to sign-in, get instructions on what areas need to be cleaned, and receive trash bags and gloves. The Boyne City Farmers Market, which over the past 25 years has gained a reputation as the best farmer's market in northern Michigan, opens the 2010 season on Saturday, May 1, at Veterans Park. The market runs from 8 a.m. to noon every Wednesday and Saturday, May through October.
Glen McCune of Freshwater Studio continues his "Put Some Art in Your Saturday" workshops. Topic is Painting/Print Making on May 1. Classes are held from 10 to noon on Saturdays for $20 per session. Call 582-2588 to make a reservation.

SPRING OPEN HOUSE will be held Raven Hill Discovery Center on Sunday, May 2, from noon to 4 p.m. In addition to the museum and animals, there will be refreshments and the opportunity to explore the Center's expanded campus. Facilities include the Main Museum, Time Tunnel, Print Shop, Art Pavilion, School House, Alternative Energy House, Tree House and the new Earth Tones Music Garden. Outdoor exhibits range from a half-acre pond, Medicinal Gardens, Beyond Jurassic Park: The Earth's Geologic History, The Ancient World, Labyrinth, Wetlands Boardwalk, and the Taxonomic (Taxi) Trail with trees grouped by families. Visitors can also register for the special Luke Buck Water Color Workshop (June 28 & 29) and sign up memberships and for summer classes. Information will also be available regarding the 2010 Art & Architecture grant awarded to Raven Hill Discovery Center by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Charlevoix County will officially get underway at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, as event volunteers and participants gather at the Odd Fellows Hall (next to Boyne City Ace Hardware) at 214 Water St. for a kickoff rally to launch their fundraising efforts for the year. Although the Relay For Life is more than three months away, now is the time to get involved. Residents are invited to attend the kick-off celebration to learn more about the Relay For Life and how they can become part of an exciting overnight event that can lead to a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Teams of family, friends and co-workers camp out overnight, taking turns walking the track. Donations can be made to this local Relay For Life event by visiting http://www.relayforlife.org/. Community members can also start or join a team by following the links to the local Relay event. The 2010 Relay For Life of Charlevoix County will take place at 10 a.m. Aug. 14 at Rotary Park in Boyne City. North Country Bicycle Club will hold its annual Ride of Silence on Wednesday, May 19, to honor cyclists who have been injured or killed and to raise awareness about "rules of the road" and motorists and cyclists sharing the road. Riders will meet at Veterans Park at 6:30 p.m. and the ride begins at 7. They will ride to Whiting Park and back at an easy 12 mph pace. There is no registration, no fee, no t-shirt. Wear a black armband to honor a cyclist who has been killed and/or a red band to honor a cyclist who has been injured while out riding. Helmets are mandatory. Walloon Balloon Adventures invites individuals interested in learning about hot air balloons to a special presentation, "UP, UP and AWAY - Hot Air Ballooning in Northern Michigan." This unique, informal seminar will be held at 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday May 20 at the Boyne District Library Community Room. With over 40 years experience flying beautiful balloons, local aeronaut Lesley Pritchard will answer the questions you've always had and share tales gathered from her colorful career. As an FAA Commercial Free Balloon Pilot and Instructor, Lesley is pleased to share historical details of the first flight in 1783 and the aeronautical achievements of the 20th century. Learn a little local balloon history, follow a few flights from lift-off to landing or simply enjoy some awesome aerial photography. The Charlevoix County History Preservation Society presents "Not Forgotten: The Journey Home of Our Ancestors" with speaker Eric Hemenway at 7 p.m. Monday, May 24, at Greensky Hill Indian Mission Church, 08484 Greensky Hill Road in Hayes Township. Eric Hemenway is an Odawa/Anishnaabe from Cross Village who works as a Research/Repatriation Assistant in the Archives/Records and Cultural Preservation Department for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. His job involves the repatriation of items and remains of deceased tribal members. Eric's presentation will explain why his tribe has created such a position within its government and how some of the activities of his department have been time-honored customs practiced by the Odawa for centuries.

Tennis players at an advanced beginner level or higher can take advantage of free instructional clinics offered by Boyne Mountain Resort during Memorial Day Weekend. The two-hour sessions are conducted on Saturday, May 29 and Sunday, May 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and are led by USPTA Certified Tennis Director Larry Stark. Instruction focuses on a series of drills to improve conditioning, ground stroke, the serve, volleying, single and double play, and more. Stark also leads a series of junior instruction programs during the summer at Boyne Mountain. The clinics take place at Boyne's Tennis Center, adjacent to the resort’s Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa. Boyne City American Legion and VFW will hold memorial services at local cemeteries from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday, May 31. At 11:30 a.m. the veterans Memorial Day Procession will leave the American Legion Post at 11:30 a.m., proceeding north on Lake Street to the Boyne River Bridge for a Lost at Sea Remembrance, then continuing north to Veterans Memorial Park for services beginning at 12 noon. The Boyne City High School Band will play the National Anthem. Area veterans are invited to participate.
