Harbor Industries Nominated for Governor’s Service Award

Nominated by Char-Em United Way, Harbor Industries was selected as a top-five finalist for the Governor’s Service Award in the Corporate Community Leader category. This award honors businesses that demonstrate excellent corporate citizenship by giving back to their community through corporate volunteer programs, monetary contributions, in-kind gifts, and employee-driven volunteer service. Harbor Industries, a product display manufacturer based in Grand Haven with a factory in Charlevoix, has always been committed to benefiting people and the planet because, they feel, it’s the right thing to do. Community involvement fits as part of their core values to do what’s right, take care of their own, stand behind what they do, and solve problems through innovation and creativity.

Jennifer Archambault, human resource manager at Harbor Industries, Charlevoix noted, "Our Core Values are very important to us, and we believe and support them every chance that we get."

Harbor Industries takes part in community-wide events such as the Pink Ribbon Ride, American Red Cross blood drives, Relay for Life, Project Connect, Day of Caring, Project Petunia, Toys for Tots, Mr. and Mrs. Claus for Harbor Kids at Boulder Park, Grand Haven Basket Luncheon Fundraiser, the Boomerang Event, the Coast Guard festival, and food and clothing drives.

"Char-Em United Way is pleased to nominate Harbor Industries for this award," says Martha Lancaster, Executive Director. "We always cite them as an excellent example of a firm which encourages volunteerism and philanthropy throughout its entire corporate culture. The local Day of Caring originated with Harbor Industries and they are the impetus for United Way’s year-round Volunteer Connections project."

The company also contributes a generous amount financially to programs that improve lives. In 2009, Harbor Industries’ employees pledged $25,329 to Char-Em United Way, and the corporation matched $2,500- totaling 9% of the campaign’s goal. Those funds are allocated to health and human service programs that have a direct impact on the lives of tens of thousands of Charlevoix and Emmet County residents.

More than 130 nominations were submitted for the service awards showcasing the exemplary efforts from Michigan’s citizens and organizations.

"We are thrilled to be acknowledged as a preeminent leader in our community...and our State. Our Harbor People Helping People Team is very excited and very proud to have been given the honor of being chosen in the top five finalist. We look forward to going to the reception and awards ceremony," Dee Vincent of the Harbor Team said.

A celebration reception will honor all of the finalists and announce one winner in each category. The Governor’s Service Awards are June 24 at the Gem Theater in Detroit. "Volunteers are the heroes of our state and help to create positive change during these challenging times when many of our fellow citizens could benefit from a helping hand," Governor Jennifer Granholm said. "The Governor's Service Awards are just one small way to say ‘thank you' to individuals who give of themselves to help make our state a better place to live, work, and grow. It is an honor to recognize them for their commitment to making a difference in the lives of others."
