    Boyne Mountain's second annual Skitoberfest on Saturday, October 2 promises to again deliver much of the fun and excitement that brought hundreds of visitors to the inaugural event. Skitoberfest celebrates the best of fall with family fun, gourmet food, a craft beer tent, wine tasting, and performing arts in an Oktoberfest style setting, plus a jib fest and Snowsports Summit.

    Families can enjoy horse drawn hayrides, cider press demonstrations, kids art projects and sing-alongs with The Music Lady Beverly Meyer, as well as face painting, costumed performers and jugglers, pony rides, a bounce house, music, dancing, a parade and more. Most family activities take place from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Village of Boyne Mountain.

    The Jordan Valley Community Band will begin the 2010-11 season on Thursday, October 7 at the East Jordan High School Band Room. Rehearsals are scheduled from 7-9 p.m, set up beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Winter concert will take place on Sunday, December 5 at 3 p.m. in the auditorium. All musicians are welcome.     "Tickled Pink" a free evening of wine, cheese, chocolate, and pampering will be held at the Charlevoix Area Hospital Solarium on Thursday October 7, 2010 from 5:30-7:30pm. There will be free chair and foot massages, 30% off everything at the hospital gift shop, and a raffle drawing of an original watercolor painting by Tim Leeper. All proceeds from ticket sales will remain locally to provide future free mammograms. Vouchers for free mammograms will be available for those without insurance. This fun and light-hearted event will be catered by Esperance and Kilwins of Charlevoix.

    "Treasures of the Jordan" Treasure Hunt starts. Saturday, October 9, 2010 The first clue will be released at 9:00 AM and posted on the Friends of the Jordan Website and the Jordan River Watershed Center door 101 Union St East Jordan (behind Sportsman's Park). You will need to travel to 4 or more locations using clues linked to the treasure map in the 2011 calendar. Those who complete the hunt will be registered for prizes to be raffled off.     Highbush cranberry is a native shrub that grows wild in wetlands and is especially prolific along the Jordan River. Great in jams and juices, we will learn to identify this tasty berry as we float Michigan's first wild and scenic river. We will also stop at a large patch of wild ginger to uproot this tasty treat and potent medicine. Bring your own canoe and baskets, or call Wagbo to see if any lenders are available.   • RAVEN HILL DISCOVERY CENTER . . . "It's a FAMILY AFFAIR at Raven Hill Discovery Center every second Saturday in 2010-next up: October 9th from noon to 4 pm. Thanks to a grant awarded by the Charlevoix County Community Foundation, the Center will offer FREE ADMISSION for families on the second Saturday of each month in 2010. Bring the whole family "team" OR make it a special event for parent and child. There will be fun problem-solving demos & activities to fit various ages, abilities and interests every month. Family groups can strengthen creative & critical thinking skills by trying a different challenge each month, plus enjoy the museum, animals and outdoor exhibits. Due to the renovations taking place at the Center, the focus in October will be outdoors and history oriented. We'll have an apple cider press in operation, a teacher in the school house and you can try your hand at some old fashioned games and activities. Watch for other fun events every second Saturday in 2010 and make plans to join us.

    Sunday, October 10th, 5 pm - Autumnberry Harvest Autumnberry (AKA autumn olive) is a prolific and conspicuous invasive shrub known to nearly every person concerned with habitat preservation. What is often overlooked is its edible and delicious berries, which ripen to a speckled-red in autumn. Excellent raw, dried, juiced, or made into jam, we will harvest loads of berries as well as recipes. Come rain or shine!     What: Take a beautiful Color tour down the lower Jordan. We will take out at the downtown boat launch and meet at the Jordan River Watershed Center for some Chili and fellowship to follow. BYO and something to share if you like. We'll provide a few variations of Chili.

    Where: Bring your canoes or kayaks to the WEBSTER BRIDGE Access. (note-other trips have gone from Rogers Rd, this is a longer trip.) We will have 1-2 cars at the finish to take people back to pick up their vehicles after taking out.

    The 2nd Annual Breezeway Fall Color Tour will be held Sat. Oct 16. Starting from Royal Farms in Atwood and ending at Boyne Falls. Goodie Bags will be presented to "Tour goers" from 11:00am - 1:00 pm at Royal Farms with suggested points of interest activities, business coupons/promotions along the Breezeway Tour. A "Pumpkin Contest" is being planned for East Jordan, Royal Farms will be having free hayrides along with other activities. Businesses and organizations are invited to participate. Anyone wanting to have a coupon. flier. etc. in the "Goodie Bag" needs to have 100 of the brochure. etc. to the Chamber office by Monday, Oct 11 so the staff can prepare the bags. Alot of press is already being circulated on the "Breezeway Color Tour" and we expect to have alot of "leaf peekers" on the road exploring our towns, businesses, attractions and activities, besides our beautiful color display.     "Arrgh Mateys there be Treasure in the Jordan Valley." In addition to finding the gold and copper in the fall foliage, you are invited to join a treasure hunt of the Jordan Valley. Those who complete the hunt will be entered to win some of the booty in the Friends of the Jordan Treasure Chest.

    It is filled with such delights as Wine tasting for 20 at the Rowe Inn in Ellsworth, a Chef's Complete Pairing Dinner for 2 prepared especially for you by Chef Joe Krumholtz at the Jordan Inn, Fine Dining at the Blue Pelican in Central Lake, at Murrays Restaurant and the Lumberjack Grill in East Jordan and certificates for pizza from the Top Ten Party Shop and from Subway of East Jordan.

    A Treasure Map, found only in the FOJ 2011 Calendar, will be needed find the clues which are linked to the photographs in the calendar. Calendars may be purchased at the Jordan Valley Animal Clinic, at the Jordan Inn, at Bier Gallery in Charlevoix and through the website. The first clue to the Treasure Hunt will be released at 9:00 AM Saturday, October 9, posted on the FOJ Website www.friendsofthejordan.org and posted on the door of the Jordan River Watershed Center.

    It will lead you to the 4 additional clues located at sites in the Jordan Valley. You will need visit and identify the sites in order to qualify for a raffle for the prizes. Be sure to take notes. The first person to complete the hunt will get 10 entries in the raffle, the second will get 5 and the third will get 3 entries. All others will get 1 entry in the raffle. The hunt will continue through Sunday, November 6, 2010 at 3:00PM giving everyone ample opportunity to qualify for the raffle.

    A drawing for the prizes will be held on November 7 at 4:00PM at the Jordan River Watershed Center. You need not be present to win.
