Crossroads Ecumenical Resale Shop now has space for large quantities of furniture in good, serviceable condition. The need is great for couches, chairs, beds, dressers, tables, etc. Additional space recently made available to us for larger items will help to increase our sales, which in turn will benefit programs for those in need in our community. The Jordan Valley Community Band will start rehearsals for its summer concert season on Thursdays at 7:00 pm in the East Jordan High School band room beginning on May 20th. The concerts will be performed each Thursday evening in July at 7:00 pm in the band shell at East Jordan's Memorial Park. If you or someone you know plays an instrument or has played in the past and would like to join us, please contact Director Becky Palmiter at 582-3734, President Leslie Cunningham at 547-2145 or Secretary/Treasurer Phyllis Childs at 582-3488 to have your name added to our mailing list or if you need help finding an instrument.

Highway and River Cleanup -Sat, May 1, 9am - 12pm. Meet at Graves Crossing off M-66 South of East Jordan Spring highway and river cleanup. Bring gloves. Bags and safety vests will be provided. If planning to do river cleanup you must be experienced as the river can be very challenging this time of year. Nineteenth annual Spring Open House which will be held on Sunday, May 2, 2010 from noon to 4 p.m. In addition to the museum and animals, there will be refreshments and the opportunity to explore the Center's expanded campus. Facilities include the Main Museum, Time Tunnel, Print Shop, Art Pavilion, School House, Alternative Energy House, Tree House and the new Earth Tones Music Garden. Outdoor exhibits range from a half-acre pond, Medicinal Gardens, Beyond Jurassic Park: The Earth's Geologic History, The Ancient World, Labyrinth, Wetlands Boardwalk, and the Taxonomic (Taxi) Trail with trees grouped by families. Visitors can also register for the special Luke Buck Water Color Workshop (June 28 & 29) and sign up memberships and for summer classes. Information will also be available regarding the 2010 Art & Architecture grant awarded to Raven Hill Discovery Center by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.
Raven Hill Discovery Center is the only place in northern Lower Michigan where children and adults can link science, history & the arts with hands-on activities and explorations both indoors and outdoors. Connections emerge through classes, exhibits and facilities that provide opportunities for all ages to learn, create, grow and play. The Center is located on 157 acres in northern Lower Michigan adjacent to Little Traverse Conservancy's Raven Ridge Nature Preserve. Since it opened in 1992, Raven Hill's focus on the connections between science, history and art has strengthened. Visitors experience the strands of science and technology, culture, history and the arts interwoven throughout the Center's hands-on exhibits and displays.

"Wellness Wednesday" will be from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 in the hospital's Solarium. The Wellness Wednesday Health Screens include:
Total Cholesterol, HDL, ratio, and Glucose levels, Body Mass Index (BMI) score, Fat Percentage, and a Blood Pressure reading. No fasting required! Cost for the service is $12. Participants will also receive a blood pressure log and pedometer as well as all test results at the time of the screen.
A Registered Nurse will adapt health Consultation and educational materials to individual results. Appointments can be made in advance by calling the office of Community Health Education at Charlevoix Area Hospital: (231) 547-8906 or by email: kjacobsen@cah.org Walk-ins are always welcome.

Bird Walk with Jerry Aydlott-Sat, May 8, 8am - 11am. Meet at the Cosner Nature Preserve. M-66 South of East Jordan, MI. This is a casual generally easy walk to see the migrating birds who have returned to the area. Bring binoculars, and field guides if you have them. Cosner Nature Preserve (131 acres) located 3 miles south of East Jordan. The preserve is located across from the Wagbo Peace Center (¼ mile south of the Antrim/Charlevoix county line).

Wild Edible Hike- Friday, May 14th, 6pm- Join the Wagbo Farm for our monthly Friday potluck! Dinner starts at 6 pm- feel free to attend with a dish or without. Beverages and table service are provided by Wagbo. The program begins at 7 pm with a "Wild Edibles Hike" through Wagbo's scenic 212-acre property. 'Tis the season for wild leeks, trout lily, spring beauty, and other delectable greens. Learn how to identify these wild goodies and go home with simple recipes that you can make at home. Jim Galbraith will be displaying his last 100 remaining photos to be auctioned off at a fundraiser for the High School Fine Arts Program. The event will take place May 14th at 7 p.m. at the East Jordan Community Auditorium. A gourmet dessert buffet followed by a short play "Emotional Baggage" by Lindsay Price will round out the evening. The photos will be on display until this time for the public to preview at the Huntington Bank Lobby, East Jordan High School Lobby and throughout the Jordan Valley District Library.

Spring Harvest Festival - Sunday May 23rd from 1 to 5 pm at The Martha Wagbo Farm and Education Center, 5745 North M-66, East Jordan. Come take a walk and learn about wild edible plants and mushrooms. There will also be a mead making, homebrew, and leek pickling, and sheep shearing workshops, and more. $10 to pre-register, $15 at the door. Dedication of FOJ Pavilion 1 PM - 3 PM An Ice Cream Social will be an opportunity to dedicate the new pavilion at the Jordan River Watershed Center. It was constructed with donations from Elizabeth Proulx and the Pray family. The Pray family has donated the last flat bottomed river boat that was used on the river by David Pray, Teddy Kotowich and other founders of the Friends of the Jordan. It will be installed in a permanent display in the pavilion.
