    Freedom From Smoking Clinic Charlevoix Area Hospital along with the American Lung Association wants to help you quit smoking. If you have reached the point where you are ready to be free from smoking this program will provide support, guidance and advice to help you reach your goal.This 8 session, 7 week program, conducted at Charlevoix Area Hospital beginning April 19 and ending June 7, 2010. Classes will be held on Mondays (excluding Memorial Day) from 5-6 pm in classroom B. There is no charge for this program. Let this be YOUR year to be Free From Smoking.   • JORDAN VALLEY COMMUNITY BAND
    The Jordan Valley Community Band will start rehearsals for its summer concert season on Thursdays at 7:00 pm in the East Jordan High School band room beginning on May 20th. The concerts will be performed each Thursday evening in July at 7:00 pm in the band shell at East Jordan's Memorial Park. If you or someone you know plays an instrument or has played in the past and would like to join us, please contact Director Becky Palmiter at 582-3734, President Leslie Cunningham at 547-2145 or Secretary/Treasurer Phyllis Childs at 582-3488 to have your name added to our mailing list or if you need help finding an instrument.

  • CHARLEVOIX AREA HOSPITAL . . . Wellness Wednesday 9 am - 4 pm in the hospital's Solarium. The Wellness Wednesday Health Screens include: Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL ratio, and Glucose levels, Body Mass Index (BMI) score, Fat Percentage, and a Blood Pressure reading. No fasting required! Cost for the service is $12. Participants will also receive a blood pressure log and pedometer as well as all test results at the time of the screen. A Registered Nurse will adapt health Consultation and educational materials to individual results.   • RAVEN HILL DISCOVERY CENTER . . . 2nd Saturday Science Series. Noon - 4 pm. Thanks to a grant awarded by the Charlevoix County Community Foundation, the Center will again offer free admission and special science activities on the second Saturday of each month in 2010, continuing this Saturday, June 12th. Bring the whole family "team" OR make it a special event for parent and child. There will be fun problem-solving demos & activities to fit various ages, abilities and interests every month. Family groups can strengthen creative & critical thinking skills by trying a different science challenge each month, plus enjoy the museum, animals and outdoor exhibits. The focus in June will be Big Wheels. Everyone can enjoy making and decorating their own "Big Wheel" and solving distance problems with it or just watching it roll down a ramp! Raven Hill Discovery Center is the only place in northern Lower Michigan where children and adults can link science, history & the arts with hands-on activities and explorations both indoors and outdoors. Connections emerge through classes, exh ibits and facilities that provide opportunities for all ages to learn, create, grow and play.   • ELLSWORTH PIG ROAST . . .
    The 30th Annual Ellsworth Pig Roast will be held Thursday, June 17 through Sunday, June 20 in downtown Ellsworth. The Pig Roast kicks off on Thursday evening with the 2nd annual Breezeway Cruise from Boyne Falls through Ellsworth to Atwood. For complete details, go to www.ridethebreezeway.com.

    Friday evenings events take place on the elementary school grounds and include a 50's style "drive-in" dinner and ice cream social featuring music by one-man-band Andy Barger. There will be a preview of the Great Lakes Timber Show featuring a cross-cut saw competition; grab partner and give it a try!

    The evening is capped by a performance by country and gospel musician Chris Dominic of Charlevoix. Saturday brings the main day of the Pig Roast and begins with the 5K Run and Walk, Pancake Breakfast and Farmers Market. The days festivities continue with historical trolley tours aboard the Mackinac Trolley, The Grand Parade, and three performances by Great Lakes Timber Show. There is plenty for the kids to do with two inflatable obstacle courses and the free games and prizes. The main event starts at noon-the Pig Roast dinner under the tents featuring roast pork, bun, potato salad, baked beans and applesauce, beverage and choice of homemade dessert accompanied by Bit of Brass Quartet. We close the day with the 3-point shoot out and Horse Pull. To celebrate our 30th year, all entertainment admission is by donation. To close the Pig Roast on Sunday evening is the traditional community worship service held this year at Iron Horse Farms barn.   • PINK RIBBON RIDE . . .
    Will be held Saturday, June 19, raising money for breast cancer programs offered through Charlevoix Area Hospital and Northern Michigan Regional Hospital. The 8th annual ride begins in Veterans Memorial Park in Boyne City with registration at 7 a.m. for the 55-mile ride. Registration for the 7, 20 and 42-mile rides is held from 7:30 to 9 a.m.; riders start as soon as they have registered. Lunch is at 12:30 p.m. Forms are available at the Chamber.

  • COUNTY WIDE BUSINESS AFTER HOURS . . .
    Four Chambers of Commerce are joining together to sponsor a Regional Business After Hours networking extravaganza at the new One Water development on the waterfront in Boyne City on Wednesday, June 23. The Business After Hours will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and will feature networking among Chamber members from Boyne City, East Jordan, Charlevoix and Petoskey. More than 200 business people are expected to attend. Admission is $5 for members of any participating Chamber, or $10 for non-members. No RSVPs are necessary.

    Hors d'oeuvres will be provided by the new Café Santé restaurant, a casual, European-style bistro which is now open in the One Water development. The event will include a cash bar and entertainment by Pete Kehoe. In addition to Café Santé, One Water includes a 24-slip marina on Lake Charlevoix, Alpine Chocolat Haus, Kidd & Leavy Real Estate and administrative offices for Michigan Community Dental Clinics. A 37-room hotel will be built in the second phase of the development, which is owned by Catt Development of Gaylord.
