Free Varicose Vein Screening Event,Thursday, July 15, 2010 4pm-7pm Dr Marc Lame will be hosting a free varicose vein screening to raise awareness for venous disease and available treatment options, including the VNUS ClosureŽ procedure.

An estimated 25 million people in the United States have varicose veins. A leading cause of varicose veins is venous reflux disease caused by incompetent or leaky valves in the great saphenous vein running from ankle to groin in each leg. In addition to varicose veins, other symptoms may include leg pain, fatigue, swelling and skin ulceration. This condition can be progressive if left untreated and symptoms may worsen with time.

It is estimated that in America, 72% of women and 42% of men will experience varicose veins by the time they are in their 60s.Peak incidence of venous insufficiency occurs in women aged 40 - 49 years and in men aged 70 - 79 years.Common risk factors for varicose veins and venous reflux include multiple pregnancies, family history, obesity, and standing professions.

Dr Marc Lame is hosting this free screening event in order to educate the community about venous disease, risk factors, prevention, and treatment options. Varicose veins frequently force people to dramatically change their lifestyles, especially when they have standing professions and can no longer tolerate being on their feet all day.

Multiple treatment options are available for this condition. Patients with venous reflux disease can now be treated with the VNUS Closure procedure, a minimally invasive treatment that uses radiofrequency energy to treat the diseased vein. Patients treated with the VNUS Closure procedure typically resume their regular activities in approximately one day. Prior to the introduction of the VNUS Closure procedure, traditional treatment has been vein stripping surgery, which can result in significantly longer return to work recovery time. Patient satisfaction with the VNUS Closure procedure is high, with 95% of patients reporting that they would recommend the procedure to a friend. The procedure is widely embraced by physicians and is covered by most insurance companies.

Those interested in attending this free varicose vein screening event can contact Charlevoix Surgeons at 231-547-2812 to make their free appointment.

  • RAVEN HILL DISCOVERY CENTER . . .
A summer celebration will be held in honor of Raven Hill Discovery Center on Friday, July 16. Summer Magic 2010: Rock Round the Clock, sponsored in part by WCMU Public Radio, will take place on the grounds of Raven Hill. Tickets are $25 per person and reservations are encouraged. The festivities begin at 7 pm in air-conditioned comfort. Guests can explore indoor and outdoor exhibits, enjoy wine and hors D'oeuvres, watch demonstrations of hot glass beads, participate in a silent auction and enjoy live music provided by both the Sweetwoods Recorder Ensemble and "Reckless Abandon" with Tom Kaufmann, Robin Berry and Kenny Chubb Of special interest will be the new Sundial built by the Leadership Little Traverse Class of 2010. The group gave their time and talents this spring to create a beautiful and functional sundial. Using donated and recycled materials, they cut wedges of granite for the dial face and welded recycled steel into the gnome n, or style. Set into the lawn near the Earth Tones Music Garden, the Sundial mirrors ancient people's efforts to tell time using the sun's shadow as the sun moves from east to west during the day. Historians believe that sundials were used as early as 2000 BCE (BC). Sundials are designed for specific latitudes, so this gnomen has a 45o angle and each granite wedge was carefully measured and cut using a special mathematical formula. During the evening, twelve rocking chairs will be "rocking round the clock (sundial)". Guests can try out the rockers and then bid on their favorite at the silent auction. Local artists have carefully hand-painted each rocker, creating unique and functional works of art. In addition, guests can explore the Earth Tones Music Garden, walk Jurassic Park, wander through the six civilizations of the Ancient World, visit the maple leaf-shaped Tree House, see the solar power of the Energy House, go back in time to the one-room Schoolhouse, compare machines and appliances in the Time Tunnel, quiet minds in the Labyrinth, check out the Medicinal and Turtle Gardens, discover nature's creations in the trees along the Taxi Trail, interact with hundreds of hands-on museum exhibits and pet or hold exotic animals. For the past nineteen years, Raven Hill has provided life-long connections for children and adults that link science, history and the arts in a hands-on learning environment. More than 135,000 visitors have experience the wonders of Raven Hill Discovery Center, since it incorporated in 1991. Classes, exhibits and facilities provide opportunities for all ages to learn, create, grow and play.

Located between East Jordan and Boyne City, Raven Hill is surrounded by forests, fields, swamps and ponds in a rural setting of more than 150 acres. It is adjacent to Little Traverse Conservancy's Raven Ridge Nature Preserve. Open seven days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Raven Hill Discovery Center is also open year-round on weekends and always by appointment.
