Second Saturday Science Series scheduled for June 11, 2011 at Raven Hill Discovery Center Families can visit Raven Hill Discovery Center on Saturday, June 11, 2011 from noon to 4 pm for a FAMILY AFFAIR. Thanks to a grant awarded by the Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, the Center will offer FREE ADMISSION and special science activities for families on the second Saturday of each month in 2011 through December 2011. Bring the whole family "team" OR make it a special event for parent and child. There will be fun problem-solving demos & activities to fit various ages, abilities and interests every month. Family groups can strengthen creative & critical thinking skills by trying different science challenges, plus enjoy the museum, animals and outdoor exhibits. The focus in June is Fossils. Polish a fossil to take home, learn about the different creatures that lived here when Michigan was under a shallow ocean and see the progress on the new coral reef exhibit that is being constructed in the Center's Exploring Beyond Jurassic Pa rk. Thanks to a grant award from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts, Raven Hill is creating a fifty foot long coral reef as part of the Center's existing Exploring Beyond Jurassic Park Exhibit. The reef will be populated by artistic interpretations of prehistoric sea creatures that might have lived here in Michigan millions of years ago. Coral reefs have been around for over 450 years as geologic features of the marine environment. Communities of plants and animals built reefs incorporating red algae, bryozoans and corals, including Michigan's state stone, the Petoskey stone. Other occupants of prehistoric reefs might have included brachiopods and sponges, jellyfish, worms, trilobites, crustaceans, crinoids and other echinoderms, nautiloids, fish, snails and clams and even "Tully monsters".
