  • JORDAN RIVER ARTS COUNCIL . . .
Jordan River Arts Council celebrates "For the Love of Letters" The Jordan River Arts Council delivers a charming Valentine this month. A new show, For the Love of Letters, celebrates handmade books, paper and typography. The public is invited to the opening on February 13, 2011, from 1-4pm. There will be a fun and interactive Valentine art project to enjoy along with the exhibit. The art project is appropriate for all ages. We are excited about the range of work that has been submitted by the community, says Barbara Young, co-curator of the exhibit. The books we have on display range from lively, quiet, intricate and personal. We even have books of 'just' paper. Del Michel, who has a painting studio in Traverse City, has two large pieces featuring typography in the show. Del often works with textiles and found objects, fragments of woven carpets and other artifacts. He explores ethnic traditions and presents this in vivid and expressive contemporary assemblages and paintings.Everyday we see letterforms all around us, says Kathleen Glynn, co -curator, who has had a career as a graphic designer. It's not often that we celebrate typography. I think people will really enjoy the way some of the artists have incorporated letters from the alphabet and symbols into their work. This sophisticated show has been juried and features the work of many Michigan artists in all medium. In addition, three workshops and a film night have been coordinated around the exhibit. The exhibit will run through March 25, open daily 1-4 pm, at the Jordan River Art Center, 301 Main St., East Jordan. For further information contact co- curator, Babs Young, Phone: 231 645 2220 or email: babsy@elkrapidsnet.com.
