First Friday Potluck by the Martha Wagbo Farm and Education Center, 6 pm. Join us for our monthly potluck series. Bring a dish to pass if you can, but it's not required. Wagbo provides drinks and table service. After dinner at 7 pm we will watch the documentary "GasLand." Director Josh Fox journeys across America to examine the negative impacts of natural gas drilling. It raises the question of whether natural gas is a viable alternative energy source, or if it's too harmful to utilize widely- a pertinent question for northern Michigan today. For more info, call Wagbo at 231-536-0333 or email wagbo@torchlake.com.

It’s a FAMILY AFFAIR at Raven Hill Discovery Center this second Saturday in 2011—January 8th from noon to 4 pm. Thanks to a grant awarded by the Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, the Center will continue to offer free admission for families and special science activities on the second Saturday of each month from January to June in 2011, starting this Saturday, January 8th. Bring the whole family “team” OR make it a special event for parent and child. There will be fun problem-solving demos & activities to fit various ages, abilities and interests. In 2010, Second Saturday Science Days were sponsored by the Charlevoix County Community Foundation and over 1400 visitors took advantage of the free admission opportunities at Raven Hill Discovery Center. Once again family groups will be able to strengthen creative & critical thinking skills by exploring a different science concept each month, plus enjoy the museum, animals and outdoor exhibits. The focus this Saturday will be Magic of Magnets. Learn how magnets work, how they are used and how they relate to electricity. Raven Hill Discovery Center is the only place in northern Lower Michigan where children and adults can link science, history & the arts with hands-on activities and explorations both indoors and outdoors. Connections emerge through classes, exhibits and facilities that provide opportunities for all ages to learn, create, grow and play. Raven Hill Discovery Center is located between East Jordan & Boyne City, just off C-48 at Pearsall Road. For more information or questions or for winter road conditions, please call 231.536.3369.

The Back Porch Concert series will be hosting an evening of poetry with special guest, poet-bard Terry Wooten. Terry is the host poet of Stone Circle in the warmer months. He has also been active in area schools, working with students to interview seniors and veterans. The students then use the collected stories to create poetry and other presentations. Terry has also been sharing his poetry and excerpts of interviews from area citizens through a popular column in the Record-Eagle newspaper.
From 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., he will share from his memorized collection of poems (classic, contemporary and original compositions) for all ages. Following Terry’s performance, we will open the stage for people to share music and poetry “in the round”.
As always, the Back Porch events are held at the Front Porch Café on Main St. in Ellsworth. Donations at the door are for the scheduled performer (suggested: $5 individual, $10 family). Light refreshments are available at no additional charge. For additional information: 231-622-2305.
