Athletes will start out swimming 1.5k in Lake Charlevoix before skimming the coastline for 40k on their bikes and passing through town on a 10k run. There are also two-person and three-person relays and shorter-distance sprint triathlon and duathlon races. The total purse for the races is $5,000. For course lengths, relay options, individual purse amounts and registration visit http://tritofinish.com/events/17. Proceeds from the event will benefit Team Lucky Seven, Inc., a Michigan-based non-profit started by Boyne City resident Rob Swartz. After being diagnosed with and recovering from one of the rarest neurological autoimmune diseases on the planet, Rob wanted to give something back. The name stems from the fact that Rob is the 7th diagnosed case of his disease. The goal of Team Lucky Seven is to organize quality sports events that help raise awareness and research funds for the large number of neurological diseases. The proceeds this year will go to the Department of Neurology at Mayo Clinic to fund research. Mayo is an important place for Rob as he had brain surgery there 16 months ago.

  • Empty Bowls Event
This year's second annual Boyne City Community Empty Bowls Event to fight hunger will be held at the Boyne District Library at noon Saturday, Sept. 28. This year the group organized by local resident Meg McClorey made 53 bowls.

For a suggested donation of $20, those who attend will select a beautiful, one-of-a-kind bowl, which is then filled with soup. Guests keep the bowl as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world. Bowls for the Boyne City event were made by people who attended Stroll the Streets this past summer. McClorey said, "The Manna Project is the logical choice to be the recipient of money raised, as Manna provides funding to all of the food banks in our area." Local chef Nathan Bates of Boyne Country Provisions will be making the soup with Ingredients donated by local farmers. Bread is being donated from The Neighborhood Bread Company of Boyne City. For further information about the project, call McClorey at (248) 635-5851.

  • Performing Arts Center
The Boyne City Firefighters Association presents Wade Hayes with special guest Kalisa Ewing at the Boyne City High School Performing Arts Center, at 3 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29. Hayes has had six top-15 singles and two gold-selling albums, "Old Enough To Know Better" and "On A Good Night." As music fans know, life experience is the greatest inspiration for creating new songs, and cancer survivor and country artist Hayes is further proof. Less than two years ago, the hit-making performer was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. The life-threatening news not only promoted a renaissance in terms of his life purpose, but also inspired him to create a new song, "Is It Already Time." Tickets are $25 and are available at the door and at the Boyne Area Chamber office, 28 S. Lake St. Call 231-225-0275 for further information.
