Community Potluck Series: Barter Circle Saturday, October 13, noon potluck, 1pm program at Martha Wagbo Farm and Education Center in East Jordan. FREE. Traditionally practiced for hundreds of years (if not more), barter circles bring together diverse groups of people to respectfully share their bounty with one another. Trading transfers goods to people who need them, builds relationships, and strengthens communities. So bring your handmade crafts, garden produce, agricultural products, gently used items, or anything else you find appropriate and become part of a tradition! (Remember, however, that this is not a garage sale or a place to dump unwanted items; rather bring something you think others will enjoy and hope to come away with something useful in return!) Bring a dish to pass if you are able, never required. Drinks and table service provided. For more information contact the Wagbo Farm at (231)536-0333 or mailto:info@wagbo.org.
Our October Back Porch Music Coffeehouse will feature Steve Guthrie and Rick Potter! Stephen Guthrie has been singing all his life, every place from campfires to church to bar rooms with chicken wire to protect the band from flying beer bottles. He took up guitar so he could accompany himself on tunes he loved, covering the musical map from the swing, jazz and blues of the big band era to the cowboy songs of Gene Autry to the classic country sounds of Patsy Cline and Willie Nelson. He has worked all over the country, meeting people through music wherever he went. Music still provides that connection with people, and he loves the joyful diversity found in both the people and the music.
Rick Potter is a finger-style guitarist and singer. He was born, raised, and started playing guitar in the Charlevoix area in high school. After living downstate for many years, he has returned with an eclectic mixture of musical influences. His music is relaxed, melody driven, and an easy listen with a “roots” feel. His repertoire includes songs from old minstrel shows, country blues, swing standards, Tin Pan Alley, older show tunes, as well as established folk songs.
Steve and Rick started “bumping into each other” at local acoustic jams and song circles about 2-3 years ago. Their musical styles and song selections blend and complement each other. Together, their music will consist primarily of some swing, old standards, show tunes, cowboy songs, old country songs, and folk songs.
The Back Porch Coffeehouse will take place on Saturday, October 13th. The Coffeehouse music series is held on the second Saturday of each month, September through May, at the Charlevoix Senior Center Building. As always, the featured performers will share music from 7 to 8:30 p.m., followed by a circle jam session with musicians and poets. Suggested donations are $5/person, $10 /family; all donations are for the scheduled performers. Light refreshments available at no charge.
Directions to the Senior Center building: From US31 at the south side of Charlevoix, turn west onto Carpenter St. (between the Pizza Hut and Flap Jack Shack). Drive .7 mile to the corner of Norwood Rd. The senior center is on the left of this corner, fully accessible facility. Contact: 231-622-2944
