  • Stroll the Streets
  • Music, fun and great times will fill the streets of downtown Boyne City this summer as Stroll the Streets returns for its ninth season -- two weeks earlier than in previous years. The popular event organized by the Boyne City Main Street program will get the summer off to a musical start on Friday, June 15, from 6 – 9 p.m. “In the past Stroll the Streets has started the last Friday in June but in recent years there were many requests to start the event earlier,” said Karen Guzniczak, chair of the Stroll the Streets organizing committee. “Last year the call for more evenings of Stroll the Streets intensified so this summer we made the decision to expand the program.” This marks the ninth year for Stroll the Streets and like past summers, music will range from traditional folk to jazz and rock. Special activities include magicians, caricature artists, face-painting and balloon-twisting. From its modest beginning, Stroll the Streets has grown to become a signature summer event for downtown Boyne City. “It’s amazing how many people have told me how much they enjoy the event,” Guzniczak said. “We have had people tell us that they make sure they leave their house downstate by a certain time just so they can get to Boyne City in time for Stroll the Streets.”

    > JUNE 15 PERFORMERS: Dawn Nelsey, Harbor Hoe Down, Irene Seaver and Billy Raveau, Jania Taylor, Melissa Welke, Mulligan Stew, Steve Guthrie, the Kowalske Family Band and a Blissfest performer. Full schedule - www.strollthestreets.com.

  • Smeltania in Boyne City history program
  • The Charlevoix County History Preservation Society is presenting a program on "Smelt Runs and Smeltania in Boyne City during the 1930s and 1940s" with guest speaker Bob Morgridge on Monday, June 25 at 7 p.m. in the Boyne District Library. At the turn of the century Boyne City was a busy lumbering town but the lumbering boom faded in the early 1920’s. The community settled down to hard times with the advent of the Depression in the 1930’s. Only the Tannery provided most of the citizens with work. During this time local people found that they could find a meal and earn a living by catching smelt and selling them for a penny or two apiece to downstate restaurants. The first smelt were dipped in the Boyne River around 1929 with the advent of the smelt runs around 1937 another event began near the shores of Boyne City - this was the establishment of Smeltania City. When Old King Winter stilled the turbulent waters of Lake Charlevoix with a thick blanket of ice, a new city called Smeltania emerged. Join us as historian and author Bob Morgridge reveals the legacy of the only city in the world built on ice. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. For more information call 231-582-5326.

  • Aten Place
  • Tim Grimm has replaced Terri Hendrix as the season opening artist at Aten Place. The opening show is scheduled for Saturday, June 30th at 7:30 pm. Terri Hendrix with Lloyd Maines had to cancel their engagement due to a medical emergency. Tim Grimm is an award-winning singer/songwriter, and actor on stage and screen. After several years working in Los Angeles, where he co-starred for two seasons on the NBC dramaReasonable Doubts and appeared with Harrison Ford in Clear and Present Danger, Tim returned to his home in Indiana. He now lives with his wife and sons on an 80 acre farm close to where he grew up. Tim’s songs are full of the rural rumblings that have shaped his life — rich with descriptive details, and sung with warmth and intimacy — recognizing the inextinguishable national romance with the idea of the family farm and the vanishing landscape of rural America. Aten Place is located 1/2 mile south of Cherry Hill Road on Old Mackinaw Trail in Boyne Falls. The venue is a ninety plus year old oak frame barn with seating for 180. Tickets are $15 and go on sale at 6:30 p.m. the day of the concert, with performances beginning at 7:30. Advanced tickets and schedule details are available by visiting www.atenplace.com. For more information go to www.atenplace.com or call 231-549-2076.
