  • FARMERS MARKET continues its Winter Market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays in the red building adjacent to the Boyne District Library. The market includes 15 local vendors selling vegetables, apples, syrup, honey, cheese, meat and baked goods. It is managed by the Boyne City Main Street Program.   • LEAF PICK-UP in the city of Boyne City continues through April 30 on Mondays and Fridays. Biodegradable paper bags may be purchased from local hardware stores.

    Boyne Area Senior Center, 411 E. Division St., is open to the public for daily lunches. For seniors age 60+, the donation is $3, for ages 60 and under. $6. For daily information call 582 6682.

  • Alternative Spring Breaks to be held across Charlevoix and Emmet Counties
  • Char-Em United Way is sponsoring Alternative Spring Breaks for area high school and college students.

    “You don’t have to travel to a foreign country to have an Alternative Spring Break experience,” points out Casey Adams, of United Way’s AmeriCorps VISTA. “This project gives you the opportunity to stay home and help right here in Charlevoix and Emmet counties.”

  • National Library Week
  • To Celebrate National Library Week, April 8-14, Boyne District Library will host paleontologist, author and storyteller Joseph Kchodl, known as “PaleoJoe” on Tuesday, April 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room. The whole family is invited to come to the free program, featuring a “real dinosaur digger.” PaleoJoe’s entertaining educational style is sure to capture the imaginations of those attending the program, as it has with the tens of thousands of children he has spoken to in schools and libraries in Michigan and surrounding states.   • will gather Sunday, April 15, from 1 to 3 p.m. for a fun afternoon of tunes and songs at Freshwater Studio, 217 S. Lake St.. Come a little early and browse the artwork and/or bring a lunch and enjoy the magic of the music.

  • SPAGHETTI DINNER

  • The Boyne Area Alano Club will host a spaghetti dinner on April 19 at St. Matthew’s Parish Hall to raise funds to support Unity Hall, a meeting place in Boyne City for several 12-Step addiction recovery programs. Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The cost is a charitable donation at the door. The Boyne Area Alano Club is a non-profit organization whose main focus is to financially support and manage a safe and caring meeting place for people suffering from addictive, compulsive or other behavioral problems. It is currently home to an average of 60 meetings per month with an average monthly attendance of 760. Contributions are always appreciated. They can be mailed to: Boyne Area Alano Club, P.O.   • ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK
  • Rock Around the Clock for Cancer, the Northern Michigan Cancer Crusaders’ annual 50s party will be held Saturday, April 21, from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Boyne City Eagles Hall. The party features live music by TNT, a DJ, celebrity performers, prizes, a cash bar and auctions. Admission is a $6 donation. Come dressed as a 50s/60s personality for a chance to win a prize.   • THE GREAT WAR
  • The Great War comes alive at 7 p.m. Monday, April 23 at Castle Farms of Charlevoix. Free and open to the public, this presentation of features Retired Sheriff George T. Lasater, whose latest book is “Charlevoix County’s Contribution to World War I.” Linda Mueller, local historian and owner of Castle Farms, assisted Lasater in the compilation of the book and will join him on stage at The Knight’s Castle. Together they will share tales of local citizens from long ago who answered duty’s call and served their nation proudly. More than 100 young people from Charlevoix County participated in “The War to End All Wars.” All are heroes to be remembered as the centennial of WWI draws closer. Following the presentation, Mueller will treat guests to a free guided tour of The Castle’s World War I Museum. This presentation is the second in this year’s History Speaker Series presented by the Charlevoix County History Preservation Society.

  • 4TH OF JULY COMMITTEE
  • 4th of July Committee will hold its first meeting of the year at 7 p.m. April 23, in the Community Room of the Boyne Distirct Library to plan Boyne City’s Independence Day activities. Volunteer help is always welcome to plan this major event. Future committee meetings will be at the same time and place on May 14 and 28, June 11 and 25.   • CAKE BAKE
  • Pack 53 is hosting a Feller's Cake Bake at 6 p.m. Wednesday April 25, at the Boyne Falls School. The Feller's Cake Bake is where the boys and their male role models bake a cake together and bring them to the cake bake auction to raise money. This is one of the fund-raisers that helps send the scouts to summer camp.

  • Early Learners Program and Kindergarten
  • The Boyne City Public Schools are reminding parents that now is the time to register for their Early Learners Program and Kindergarten. The Early Learners Program is for children who will be ages 3 to 5, and Kindergarten is for those who will turn 5 before December 1. Early Learners Registration Night is at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19 at the Early Childhood Building, 321 S. Park St.. For further information call 231-439-8178. This program is flexible, allowing parents to pick their own hours and days. There are separate classrooms for 3 and 4 year olds, field trips, weekly visits to the library, a computer in each classroom and many other program highlights. If you believe your child is ready for kindergarten and he/she will turn 5 years old before December 1, 2012 register to attend one of the following kindergarten round-up sessions by calling 439-8300.

  • Business Expo and Taste of Boyne
  • The Boyne Area Chamber’s largest Business Expo ever is all set for next Thursday, April 26, at the former Carter’s store. This year’s event has grown to more than 90 exhibitors in 97 booth spaces and is again expected to attract a crowd of 1,000 people. Always fun and exciting, the Expo is presented by Northwestern Bank and includes great food, networking, music and business exhibits from 3 to 7 p.m. It all happens at the former Carter's Store on M-75 South.   • CLINIC CLOSED ON 27TH
  • The Boyne Area Free Clinic will be closed Friday, April 27, when Dr. Mansfield will be out of town attending his daughter's college graduation. The Leadership Charlevoix County class will be painting that dahy, beginning with the waiting room. The clinic will be open regular hours the following Friday, May 4, which is also Dr. Mansfield’s birthday.

  • Farmers Market
  • Good Bye Red Barn, Hello Outdoors” is a special event planned for Saturday, April 28, for the final indoor version of the Boyne City Farmers Market. Join us for the last “The Red Barn” Market Day, 10 a.m. -2 p.m. next to the Boyne District Library. Share a recipe using your favorite spring produce - we’ll post them on a board and share them online. Children will create a mural of the upcoming goodies the outdoor season holds. Bring a lawn chair, we'll provide the lemonade - catch up with friends and celebrate the outdoors. The market starts its outdoor season Wednesday, May 2, and Saturday, May 5 from 8 a.m. to noon in Veterans Park on Lake Street. The Wednesday-Saturday schedule will continue through October.
