Raven Hill will celebrate the Winter Solstice on Monday, December 21, 2009 during the regularly scheduled open hours of noon to 4 pm. There will be activities having to do with time and timepieces from different time periods. Visitors can make a sundial for telling time and investigate a water clock and use a perpetual calendar to figure out what day their birthday falls on in any future year! Glowing luminaries will be found close to the Center and a bonfire will provide warmth and a place to roast marshmallows outdoors. Visitors can come back inside for cider or hot chocolate and other treats, all in honor of the Winter Solstice. Raven Hill Discovery Center's fieldstone replica of the Bluestones of Stonehenge are usually the center of the celebration at Raven Hill, but this year the Celebration will focus closer to the Center for those who can't make the trip to the Ancient World.
Visitors are encouraged to pay the general admission fee of $8, especially if they plan to play in the museum and visit the animals. There will also be demonstrations of hot glass bead making during the day. For those interested in a bigger adventure, visitors can bring snowshoes or cross country skis and visit the Center's Ancient World to see the Center's Bluestones and other objects there from ancient cultures.
