Moving On Sale

  • Boyne Country Books announces closing March 31
After almost 15 years in business, Boyne Country Books is closing. Owners Steve and Kathy Anderson invite everyone to participate in their "Moving-On Sale" - storewide savings of 50 percent off all merchandise except magazine, coffee and consignment items. They are also selling many fixtures, including solid wood bookshelves, tables and chairs. "We will always have wonderful memories of these last 15 years, but sometimes change is necessary," said Kathy Anderson. "It is our hope that someone else with the necessary resources will try something similar in the area." She anticipates that the store's last day of business will be March 31. Stop in, wish them well and get some great deals - everything must go by the end of the month. Boyne Country Books is located at 125 Water St., Boyne City, phone 231-582-3180. Business hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

    Middle School Playground Project

  • Great Lakes Energy donates to middle school playground project
Thanks to a grant from Great Lakes Energy, Boyne City Middle School is $2,500 closer to meeting its fund-raising goal for playground equipment. With donations from the People Fund of Great Lakes Energy, the Boyne City Boosters Foundation, Builders Club, Middle School Student Council, PTO and private donors, the school has now raised $7,500 toward this $10,000 project. Their goal is to complete the project this spring by raising an additional $2,500. Members of Great Lakes Energy support the People Fund by voluntarily rounding up their bills to the next highest dollar. The rounded-up amount is distributed to non-profit organizations and charitable activities. Anyone who would like to contribute to the playground fund may contact Jamie Baumann at the school, 439-8231.

  • News-Review to discuss news plans for Boyne City, East Jordan
The Boyne Area Chamber and Boyne City Main Street Program are organizing a second community meeting devoted to a discussion of how to fill the void created by losing the community's local newspaper. The meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, March 2, in the Community Room of the Boyne District Library, 201 E. Main St. One idea voiced at a Feb. 9 meeting was to have the Petoskey News-Review create a section of the paper devoted to news from Boyne City and East Jordan. Representatives of the News-Review will attend the meeting to show a prototype of such a section. They are also seeking ideas for a name for the section. The Citizen-Journal weekly newspaper stopped publishing Jan. 28, 2009, after 120 years.

  • Spring fever at the Boyne District Library
The perfect cure for turning cabin fever into spring fever is coming to Boyne District Library on March 28 from 2 to 5 p.m. All ages are invited to a performance by storyteller La'Ron Williams, who will "take us on a journey with stories from around the world: from Michigan's colorful past to Africa and South America." LaRon Williams is a nationally acclaimed, award-winning storyteller who has toured extensively presenting programs and workshops. Children and adults respond with equal enthusiasm to his warmth and vigor as he uses dialect, facial expressions and movement to breathe life into tales which transcend the boundaries of class and age. He incorporates singing, acting and visual art into his storytelling. With his gifted voice he might create thunder, or the sound of falling water. Williams accompanies his stories with songs and a variety of traditional instruments from Africa, South America and North America.

The "Spring Fever" event will start with creating a whimsical flower pot and planting a spring bulb in it, adding cheer to any windowsill or table as it grows and blooms. Attendees will also enjoy a spring snack, and several Hydrangea plants in 12-inch pots will be given away as door prizes, ready for outdoor planting. The plants are part of the Boyne Valley Garden Club's annual plant and shrub sale.

There is no charge for admission. For more information, contact the library at 582-7861.
