Malcolm Johnstone of West Chester, Pa., will present the workshop as part of a two-day marketing visit here, which will include two public presentations, small group meetings with businesses and community leaders, and individual meetings with business owners. The Boyne City Main Street Program is sponsoring the workshops.

Johnstone will focus on successful marketing strategies for small businesses at the Feb. 24 presentation. The following day, Feb. 25, he will hold a workshop on "Comprehensive Strategies for Marketing Boyne City," also at 5 p.m. in the library. Johnstone has been a downtown development specialist since 1985 serving as start-up manager with the Pendleton Downtown Association, the McMinnville Downtown Association - both in Oregon - and the Coeur d'Alene Downtown Association in Idaho. He also spent five years with Livable Oregon providing technical assistance to more than 40 downtowns around that state.

He is certified in professional downtown management by the National Main Street Center in Washington, D.C., and is a regular presenter at the National Main Street Conference, an annual gathering of downtown professionals. His article "Leveraging Public Relations to Promote Your Main Street" was the cover story for the October 2008 Main Street News, a monthly journal of the National Trust Main Street Center. Johnstone joined the West Chester (PA) Business Improvement District as executive director in 2001. Since then, that organization has received more than 20 awards and recognitions. He also owns a small business in the downtown.
