United Way meets National Membership Requirements

Martha Lancaster, Executive Director, announced that Char-Em United Way has successfully completed all of United Way‘s national membership requirements by their respective due dates. . The annual certification process includes completing the Membership Requirements Certification, Membership Investment to support the national office, and a survey of Total Resources Generated (a survey that captures the full extent of a community’s resource development efforts during the year). Over and above the annual requirements, Char-Em United Way recently completed a mandatory organizational self-assessment, as part of this process.

“The membership requirements must be certified annually in order for us to remain a member of United Way,” stated Lancaster. “It is important for us to maintain high standards of accountability, and this is part of the process to confirm that our operations are transparent and meet or exceed United Way requirements.”

The Board of Char-Em United Way approved the Membership Requirements Certification on June 17. The certification mandates completion of 13 requirements for United Way membership, along with verification of the status of 61 indicators that a United Way demonstrates the intent of the membership requirements (as examples, conflict of interest policies).

Char-Em United Way is part of a worldwide network in 30 countries and territories, including 1,259 local organizations in the U.S.

“All United Ways must meet the highest standards and verify that they have conformed to the requirements of membership,” said Brian Gallagher, president and CEO, United Way. “We applaud Char-Em United Way’s commitment to accountability and, importantly, their continued efforts to support work in their community which improves lives and advances the common good for all people.”

As an integral part of Charlevoix and Emmet Counties, Char-Em United Way improves lives by providing financial support for effective health and human service programs that meet identified community needs. In addition, United Way provides leadership for the Day of Caring, Project Connect, and other initiatives including Volunteer Connections, 2-1-1, and Friends Enhancing Emmet Transit.

The annual United Way Campaign which supports all these activities is underway. To donate or for more information call 231-487-1006, email info@charemunitedway.org or log on to www.charemunitedway.org.
