United Way Reaches 55% Mark

Extends thank you to donors

Char-Em United Way announced that it has passed the 55% mark toward its 2010 Campaign Goal of $350,000.

“At this time of Thanksgiving, we want to thank our donors who are reaching deep in their pockets to help us support community services,” says Martha Lancaster United Way Executive Director. “As the economic downturn continues to hit northern Michigan hard, we are especially grateful that so many people and businesses have been so generous to United Way and the community. Our theme of Live United is striking a responsive chord.”

“We are pleased that we are ahead of dollars raised at this time last year. With the need so great in our community for a wide range of health and human services, we have increased our goal 8%. The Frey Foundation has offered an additional $20,000 challenge grant if we reach the goal, which is a great incentive,” continued Lancaster. “All but 1.5% of the funds we raise stay in our community.”

Programs selected for funding are reviewed by United Way’s Citizen Review Panel to ensure they make a significant impact on the Education, Income, and Health needs in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties. Earlier this year, Char-Em United Way invested over $210,000 in effective health and human service programs reaching local residents. In addition, United Way is involved in many other initiatives – Volunteer Connections, Day of Caring, 2-1-1, Friends Enhancing Emmet Transit, the Poverty Reduction Initiative, and others. Funds raised this fall will be invested in community programs in the coming year.

Much of the funds raised by United Way come from workplace campaigns. Early employee and corporate support for the United Way Campaign has come from Alanson Public Schools, Huntington, PNC, and Fifth Third Banks, Fletch’s, Harbor Industries, and Michigan Scientific Corporation. Campaigns are currently underway in many other local workplaces. Donations from individual and small businesses are up significantly this year.

“Additional gifts have come from other worksite campaigns and many generous individual and small business donors,” says Lancaster. “New workplace campaigns this year include Northern Michigan Regional Hospital’s Management Team, Fox Motors, Town and Country Cedar Homes, and Meijer’s. We have also gained many new donors to our Leadership Circle of individual and business donors who contribute $500 or more each year.”

Char-Em United Way is continuing to accept tax-deductible contributions to the 2010-2011 Campaign. Donations can be mailed to P O Box 1701, Petoskey MI 49770. Gifts can be made online by going to: www.charemunitedway.org and selecting “Give.” For more information about United Way call 487-1006 or email: info@charemunitedway.org
