Donation Stations planned for United Way Small Business Blitz

A free cup of coffee will reward donors to Char-Em United Way’s Small Business Blitz on Wednesday October 6.

Roast and Toast in Petoskey and Sadie and Jakes in Charlevoix will serve as “Donation Stations” for the Blitz. Small businesses or individuals dropping off a donation to United Way of $10 or more will receive a free cup of coffee in a LIVE UNITED mug (while supplies of the mugs last).

“We are happy to partner with United Way on this special event,” says Mary Keedy, owner of Roast and Toast. “There is such a huge need for health and human services in our community right now, and United Way is helping to meet that need.”

The Small Business Blitz is an effort to engage support from small businesses in Emmet and Charlevoix Counties for the United Way Campaign.

“We will have a volunteer on site at both locations from 10 a.m. til 4 p.m., providing information about community needs and the programs that United Way supports,” says Martha Lancaster, Executive Director of United Way.

In addition, the LITE 96.3 FM van will be at Sadie and Jakes from 10 – 12 and at Roast and Toast from 12:30 til 2:30. Donors will have a chance to meet LITE 96.3 staff, as well as volunteers from United Way. All pledges of $25 or more will be read on LITE 96.3 FM throughout the day. In addition, all businesses donating during the Blitz will be entered in a drawing to win prizes including ads in the Petoskey News-Review and passes to Avalanche Bay.

On October 6, volunteers from United Way – many of them representatives of United Way’s 26 partner agencies – will be visiting and calling on small businesses, both in and out of the downtown areas of Petoskey, Charlevoix, Harbor Springs and Boyne City throughout the Blitz. The volunteers will provide information about United Way and ask for a pledge or donation.

“We hope the Small Business Blitz will give small businesses the opportunity to learn more about how they can help United Way meet community needs. We are grateful to the support of LITE 96.3, Roast and Toast, and Sadie and Jakes for the event,” continued Lancaster. “We hope the giveaways, free publicity and the excitement of the radio announcements will encourage businesses to donate. But the most important reason to donate is the increased need in the community for health and human services.”

Char-Em United Way has set a goal of $350,000 this year, and the Frey Foundation has offered an additional $20,000 challenge grant if the goal is reached. With economic conditions in Northern Michigan continuing to be serious, the need for the services supported by United Way is greater than ever. The campaign is currently at 20% of its goal.

Early bird pledges and on-line donations for the Small Business Blitz are also welcome. Information about community needs and programs supported by United Way is available at www.charemunitedway.org. Donations can be made from that secure website.

There is no minimum or maximum pledge. Donations of any size will help Char-Em United Way reach its goal and help meet community needs during the coming year.

Volunteers are also being recruited to help with the Small Business Blitz. For additional information or to make a donation over the phone, call 231-487-1006.

When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all. Please support your local United Way. Look for our volunteers on Wednesday, October 6 or contact our office to make your pledge. Thank you!
