  • Raven Hill Discovery Center . . .
Summer Magic 2009: "Earth Tones Music Garden", sponsored in part by WCMU Public Radio, will take place on the grounds of Raven Hill on Friday, July 17, 2009. At 7 p.m. the festivities begin ($20 per person--reservations encouraged) in air-conditioned comfort. Guests are invited to explore indoor and outdoor exhibits and enjoy wine & hors d'oeuvres, demonstrations of Hot Glass beads and scientific glassblowing, a silent auction, live music from the new Earth Tones Music Garden with Tom Kaufmann and friends; the Petoskey Steel Drum Trio and Sweetwoods Recorder Ensemble.

Of special interest will be the new outdoor exhibit, Earth Tones Music Garden that connects the science of sound and the history of instruments to the art of music. Earth Tones does not refer to colors, but rather to the deep and rich sounds that emerge as visitors use the earth as sounding boards and resonating chambers and earth materials to generate beautiful melodies with wood, metal and stone instruments. The Earth Tones musical instruments include a 40' friction harp, stone lithophone, Amadinda, whale drum, slap tubes, giant chimes and more, all which can be played separately or used in concert. The garden is made possible by a 2008 grant award from Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.

In addition to Earth Tones Music Garden, guests can explore Jurassic Park, wander through the six civilizations of the Ancient World, climb the maple-shaped Tree House, see the power of the Energy House, go back in time to the one-room schoolhouse, quiet minds in the Labyrinth, check out the medicinal and turtle gardens, discover nature's creations in the trees along the Taxi Trail, interact with hundreds of hands-on museum exhibits and pet or hold exotic animals. More than 129,000 visitors have experienced the wonders at Raven Hill Discovery Center.

We just got word that Jim Cooper, well-known mallet percussionist from the Chicago area, will join the musical line-up at Raven Hill Discovery Center this coming Friday evening, July 17th at 7 pm. We are excited to have so much talent gather to dedicate our new outdoor Earth Tones Music Garden.

Located between East Jordan and Boyne City,Raven Hill Discovery Center is surrounded by forests, fields, swamps and ponds in a rural setting of more than 150 acres. It is adjacent to Little Traverse Conservancy's Raven Ridge Nature Preserve. Open seven days a week from Memorial Day through Labor Day, Raven Hill Discovery Center is also open all year on weekends
