  • RAVEN HILL DISCOVERY CENTER . . .
    Raven Hill Discovery Center is pleased to announce its eighteenth annual Spring Open House which will be held on Sunday, May 3, 2009 from noon to 4 p.m. In addition to the museum and animals, there will be refreshments and the opportunity to explore the Center's expanded campus. Facilities include the Main Museum, Time Tunnel, Print Shop, Art Pavilion, School House, Alternative Energy House and the new Tree House. Outdoor exhibits range from a half-acre pond, Medicinal Gardens, Beyond Jurassic Park: The Earth's Geologic History, The Ancient World, Labyrinth, Wetlands Boardwalk, and the Taxonomic (Taxi) Trail with trees grouped by families. Visitors can also sign up for memberships and for summer classes.

    Raven Hill Discovery Center is the only place in northern Lower Michigan where children and adults can link science, history & the arts with hands-on activities and explorations both indoors and outdoors. Connections emerge through classes, exhibits and facilities that provide opportunities for all ages to learn, create, grow and play. The Center is located on 157 acres in northern Lower Michigan adjacent to Little Traverse Conservancy's Raven Ridge Nature Preserve. Since it opened in 1992, Raven Hill's focus on the connections between science, history and art has strengthened. Visitors experience the strands of science and technology, culture, history and the arts interwoven throughout the Center's hands-on exhibits and displays.

  • Bergmann Center's Annual "Starlight" Dinner and Live Auction . . .
    This is Bergmann Center's 7th annual "Starlight" Dinner and Live Auction where "your support helps our stars shine!" The auction is being held on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at the Emmet County Community Building, located at the Fairgrounds in Petoskey, beginning with browsing the auction at 12:30 p.m. dinner being catered by Grey Gables at 1:30 p.m. the excitement of a live auction performed by John Murray starts at 2:30 p.m. A fun time is had by all with the highest bidder being the true winner. The community shows their support by their donations of items and services beyond compare.

  • Walk. Run. Cure.
    The 15th Annual Sue DeYoung/Judy Edger Memorial Breast Cancer 5K Walk & Run is Saturday, May 9. You can be a part of the cure and help Charlevoix County Residents. Monies raised go to the Circle of Strength Foundation to provide mammograms for women in need and to the Health Department for the free cervical cancer screening program in Charlevoix County. So, bring your friends, family, or co-workers be part of the event. You can collect pledges. Those with over $25 of pledges can receive a commemorative t-shirt. Registration begins in East Park in Charlevoix at 9 a.m. The 5K Walk & Run begins at 10 a.m. Pledge forms are available at area Chambers, schools, libraries, fitness centers or online. Questions?     Join Wagbo volunteer and fungus enthusiast Yvonne Stevens for a Morel walk on Sunday, May 10 Meet for the morning session at 10:00. We'll return to the farmhouse by about noon to take a break for lunch and ID our mushroom bounty! An afternoon session will meet at 1:00, for another hike and more mushroom ID. The day will end at around 4:00.Come for one or both sessions! If possible and there is interest, we will saute some mushrooms for people to sample.Things to bring along: a small knife, basket or mesh bag, compass, insect repellent, sturdy boots or shoes, long pants, rain gear, water or juice and a sack lunch or snack.This program is free! The Institute for Sustainable Living, Art, and Natural Design (ISLAND) and the Martha Wagbo Farm and Education Center are teaming up to bring you this exciting fiber arts field day! If you enjoy working with wool, if you've ever thought about raising your own sheep for wool, or if you're just curious about how wool is taken off the sheep and transformed into textiles, then this event is for you. Experienced instructors will take you through the process from raw wool to finished product. Four approximately one-hour workshops/ demos will teach shearing; skirting, cleaning, and carding the wool; natural and chemical dyeing techniques; spinning yarn on a drop spindle; and felting. One price covers all workshops as well as snacks and refreshments. Everyone will go home with their own hand-made yarn and felted piece! The event will be held at the Martha Wagbo Farm and Education Center, 5745 North M-66-at the intersection with Kidder Rd. just three miles south of East Jordan! Registration is required and space is limited to 20 participants.
